Mr. Speaker, I rise today to present e-petition 7510, initiated by Lori Guetre of British Columbia and supported by 681 Canadians.
The petitioners emphasize that Canadians deserve to know the climate impact of products they buy. While internationally recognized standards already allow producers to measure product carbon footprints, that information remains largely invisible to consumers in Canada. Standardizing labelling would help Canadians make informed choices, reward producers who reduce emissions and encourage greater transparency across the marketplace.
The petitioners are calling upon the Government of Canada to develop and implement mandatory, standardized and comparable carbon footprint labels for consumer products sold in Canada, so that Canadians can make informed choices, lower emissions producers are recognized and rewarded, and Canada can help accelerate global emissions reductions on a meaningful scale.
