Mr. Speaker, Canadians used to make grocery lists, but now they are making grocery sacrifices. They are no longer choosing what goes in their carts, but what they have to leave out.
Half of surveyed Canadians say they are using their savings for basic necessities, and nearly one in three Canadians surveyed are skipping meals or eating less because they cannot afford groceries. Toronto food banks record over four million visits per year, which is over a 300% increase since 2019. In my home province of Manitoba, food banks recorded more than 71,000 visits in March alone, with nearly 25,000 households seeking help every single month.
Canadians are cutting back at the checkout while the government keeps running up the bill. My constituents do not need another Liberal handout. They need honest tax relief so that they do not need to go to food banks, but can, once more, afford to go to grocery stores.
