Mr. Speaker, since June, certain facts have been coming to light about the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal. A team at station 39 was disbanded, allegations of racist acts were made, and evidence of domestic violence provided by a victim was allegedly destroyed.
On Monday, we learned that the police force had fired seven police officers. That response was necessary. However, for the riding of Bourassa, it is neither a finish line nor the end of the matter.
I am telling the police force that it needs to meet the moment. Montrealers are entitled to transparency and public accountability. I am thinking about the people who were affected, the families who were afraid and the police officers who had the integrity to break the silence.
I want to remind all of those people that they are not alone. In Canada, safety is not a privilege, dignity is not negotiable, and a person's background should not determine how they are treated.
