Statements in the House

Apec Inquiry November 6th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I have spoken to this many times in the House. It is important to remind everyone that the complaints commission is initiated by the complainants. They deserve to have their day. That is the reason the government is supporting the continuance of the public complaints commission because to do otherwise would be undue and unfortunate political interference.

Apec Inquiry November 5th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I think the real question is: When will we allow the commission to get to the truth and past all of this political rhetoric?

Apec Inquiry November 5th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, to interfere with this process once it has commenced by virtue of a complaint issued by a complainant would be political interference of the worst kind. We will not do it.

Apec Inquiry November 5th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I refer to a news release issued yesterday by the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association which reads:

We continue to believe that the Commission can bring to light all the evidence about the RCMP's conduct during the APEC conference at UBC last year, and the federal government's role in that conduct. We want our complaints heard.

Apec Inquiry November 3rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, as I have said many times, the Public Complaints Commission was established so that citizens would have access to a process that would not require that. That is the reason that counsel to the commission is assisting the students in their preparation during this procedure.

The Public Complaints Commission is an independent, arm's length organization established by parliament to do exactly what it is doing right now.

Apec Inquiry November 3rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, is the hon. member suggesting that the government should interfere with a process that was established by parliament in 1988? Is that what the hon. member is suggesting? This government will not do it.

Apec Inquiry November 3rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, what the hon. member does not understand is that the public complaints commission was initiated by an action of the complainants. They started the process. Now the process is master of its own procedures.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police November 2nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, why can the hon. member across the way not understand what a discredit it is to him to taint the reputation of the RCMP based on information that is inaccurate? He suggests that the only reason the commissioner was there was for that purpose when, in fact, there was a whole series of business conducted during that trip.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police November 2nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the trip to England was not paid for by the RCMP. What kind of message is that sending to Canada?

Royal Canadian Mounted Police November 2nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, this kind of demagoguery is particularly unfortunate in the 125th year of RCMP service to this country.

The hon. member could well serve this country to speak of the accomplishments of the RCMP this year and not that kind of trash.
