Statements in the House

Aboriginal Affairs March 27th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, yesterday we asked the Indian affairs minister to appoint a judge to look into the tragic deaths on the Tsuu T'ina reserve near Calgary. She ignored our suggestions. She said the government already had the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, and it did not have to investigate any more. That commission produced 400 recommendations but the report has been on the shelf gathering dust.

What specific recommendations from that report is the government applying to the Tsuu T'ina reserve?

Indian Affairs And Northern Development March 26th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, unsettled native land claims and the supreme court's Delgamuutw decision are making land tenure in B.C. extremely uncertain. Mining and forestry jobs are disappearing for both natives and non-natives. How many more thousands of jobs must B.C. lose before the federal government addresses this burning issue?

Budget Implementation Act, 1998 March 24th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, again we get into a balanced budget scenario here.

Before we get into that, the member mentioned disagreeing with his leader, the Prime Minister. Maybe he has learned to not disagree with the Prime Minister in the same way the hon. member from York South—Weston has learned. He now sits over on this side of the House.

I will ask the member the same question I have asked other members on that side today. I have had a number of phone calls from my constituency in regard to the high taxation levels in Canada. I have only heard one member from over there say he has had two phone calls on it. I would like to know if the member himself has had any phone calls on the high taxation levels that this government is imposing on honest, hard-working citizens in this country.

Budget Implementation Act, 1998 March 24th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I listened to the hon. member talking about the balanced budget and taking accolades for the government on that score.

I would like to remind the member that most of this budget was done on the backs of the taxpayers. In the basic rural community that I come from, I have had a number of phone calls with regard to the high taxation level in Canada under both the provincial and federal governments. As a matter of fact, B.C. is the highest taxed part of North America. A large percentage of that is right from the federal government.

I would like to ask the member if he has had any phone calls or questions with regard to the high taxation.

House Of Commons March 10th, 1998

Yes, you bet.

The Budget March 9th, 1998

Madam Speaker, I have been listening very intensely all morning to the so-called sharing and caring Liberal government and now I have a question for the hon. member for Prince George—Bulkley Valley.

I have heard about the money flowing back into education and the health care system from this government. My understanding is that it has ripped billions out of this system and is now basically giving us back pennies in return. I would appreciate if the hon. member could address this.

Taxation February 24th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, Florence Shannon from Tappen in my riding of Okanagan—Shuswap is a senior citizen. She pays so much tax and has such a small pension that she wrote to the Prime Minister through me. I quote:

Thank you for dictating to me how I must spend my money. This means I do not have your permission to own anything. Thank you for making my old age like living in hell.

Will the Prime Minister tell Mrs. Shannon and other senior citizens why he is treating the taxpayers' surplus as if it was his own money?

Canadian Wheat Board Act February 17th, 1998

Madam Speaker, I sat here and listened to the member opposite give his speech. Now I fully understand why out west the House in Ottawa is called the bull capital of Canada. There is no doubt about that.

The hon. member talked a lot about democracy. He mentioned democracy in his speech. To me democracy is the understanding that we have freedom of choice. Bill C-4 does not give us that freedom of choice.

I have a very specific question for the member. What assurance do the farmers on the prairies have that the people the government will appoint to these boards will have farming or marketing experience? What assurance is there in Bill C-4 of that?

Petitions February 13th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I wish to table a petition from 27 people in my riding of Okanagan—Shuswap. These people point out that the best way to deal with nuclear weapons is to do away with them entirely.

Therefore they ask Parliament to support an immediate start of an international convention which will create a binding timetable for the abolition of all nuclear weapons.

Division No. 72 February 12th, 1998
