Statements in the House

Petitions February 18th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36 I have a petition from people from Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon, Omemee and Lindsay asking Parliament to enact legislation to ensure that Canada remains one country, undivided from coast to coast to coast.

Marian Sweetnam February 17th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, it gives me great pleasure to rise today and inform the House of an award winning coach from Lindsay, Ontario.

Marian Sweetnam was presented recently with her second Ontario female coach of the year award at the 29th annual Ontario sports award ceremony in Toronto. The first time she won the award was in 1989, the same year she was selected Canadian swimming coach of the year.

Marian's swim club, the Lindsay Lightningbolts, won the division 3 team championship last year. Her most successful student is her daughter Nancy who has won 13 national championships while setting 7 national records.

Congratulations on your recent achievements, Marian.

Sir William Mackenzie Inn February 11th, 1997

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to inform the House of one example of turning disaster into success. In Kirkfield, Ontario the Sir William Mackenzie Inn is doing just that.

A tornado in 1995 wiped out many mature trees across the 13 acres of land. Instead of this devastating the land of the inn, it gave the owners an idea. On June 22, 1996 the inn decided to have a wood carving contest using chainsaws. The inn awarded free accommodation, great prizes and lots of media coverage.

Once destroyed trees turned into works of art. One carving resembled a moose in the forest, while another resembled mother nature. The winner, "Cougar on the Rocks", by Peter Turrell was spectacular.

In conclusion, I would like to congratulate Joan and Paul Scott for turning a near business closing incident into a huge success.

Mr. Speaker, when you visit Kirkfield this summer, drop in to view these masterpieces.

Petitions February 3rd, 1997

Mr. Speaker, the second petition is presented under Standing Order 36 also calls on the Parliament of Canada assembled to enact legislation to ensure that Canada remains one country, undivided, from coast to coast to coast.

Petitions February 3rd, 1997

Mr. Speaker, I have two petitions to present under Standing Order 36.

The first one calls on Parliament to renew and ensure that AIDS funding goes beyond March 1998 and to renew the national AIDS strategy now.

This is a petition from the people in Victoria-Haliburton.

The Pages December 11th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, in each session of Parliament I offer a challenge to the pages who serve us in the House of Commons. The current group was given the challenge of producing a picture of their home area. The contest included a small six-pack of Crayola crayons which are produced in my riding of Victoria-Haliburton in the town of Lindsay, and a single piece of white paper. The contest was judged by Hélène Monette, a security guard in the lobby. This session's winner is Theresa Cooke of Hull, Quebec.

Congratulations to all pages who took part in the contest with such enthusiasm. Merry Christmas.

Downriver Kayak Championships December 9th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, over the summer the Canadian national downriver kayak championships were held in Minden, Ontario, a town which is located in my riding of Victoria-Haliburton.

Today I would like to congratulate Monica Moisander from Lindsay, Ontario on becoming the Canadian national downriver kayak champion. This is her fourth title as she won in 1992, 1993 and 1994.

In her event Monica was up against a strong field of competitors but she still managed to win by a comfortable 10-second margin. Monica also competed for the first time in the slalom event where she finished a very respectable seventh.

Who knows, by the year 2000 we could see her competing at the summer Olympics. Way to go, Monica. Congratulations on your success.

Minden Dog Sled Derby November 22nd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to announce the 12th Annual Minden Dog Sled Derby on January 18 and 19, 1997. This is the largest dog sled race purse in North America. It will draw competitors from around the world to Haliburton County and the village of Minden. This is a unique weekend with fun events for the whole family.

I would like to congratulate Val and Steven Loughead, Stu Brandon, Jack Brezina and Sue Collings, the five planners responsible for the event, not to mention the leaders, volunteers, community sponsors and mushers who will make this race the best ever.

You only have to be a spectator, not a musher, to take part. Let Bill Payne welcome you to the main street of Minden for the excitement of seeing canine and human athletes compete for a piece of the $42,000 purse.
