Statements in the House

Fire Prevention Week October 11th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, Fire Prevention Week began October 6. This Saturday, October 12 is Fire Service Recognition Day. This is our chance to honour Canada's 98,000 firefighters, full time and volunteer professionals alike.

As a former volunteer firefighter with Lindsay Ops, I want to emphasize how vital this service is to Canadians and ask you to follow this year's Fire Prevention Week slogan: "Let's hear it for fire safety. Test your detectors". Let us deliver the message on behalf of firefighters across the country to remind people that a fully operational smoke detector will save the lives of you and your neighbour.

This Thanksgiving Day take time to check your detector. If you need assistance, ask any firefighter. They care about your safety.

Boston Marathon June 17th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, today I want to congratulate Ian Moorhouse and Marcel Crete for completing the 100th Boston marathon.

Both runners come from Haliburton, Ontario. The two men joined 38,000 other runners attempting to finish the 26-mile race. Their goal was simple, to finish the race, and they accomplished that.

There were competitors from 100 countries. Their goal was even tougher when they had to train indoors throughout the winter and then for the first time race outside at the event.

Where these men or any Canadian finishes does not matter. The simple fact is they finished the race, a race in which others did not and would not attempt. Congratulations on a truly remarkable performance.

Petitions June 4th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, pursuant to Standing Order 36, I am pleased to present a petition from people in the beautiful part of Ontario, Coboconk, Fenelon Falls, the Victoria-Haliburton area, calling on Parliament to enact legislation at the earliest opportunity to provide in Canadian law that no criminals profit from committing a crime.

Agriculture May 27th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, Canadians in the agriculture and agri-food section are concerned with jobs and the economy overall.

Can the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food give the House any assurance that this vital section of our economy will meet the target of $20 billion in exports by the year 2000?

Lesley Tashlin May 14th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, it is an honour to rise today and speak about a very gifted athlete who hails from Haliburton County. Lesley Tashlin will be representing Canada, as she has qualified in the 100 metre hurdle track and field event for the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

At a recent outdoor meet in the United States Lesley beat the qualifying standard time and earned a place on the Canadian team for the summer Olympics. She was clocked at a personal best of 13.04, beating the standard by one-tenth of a second, which in track and field is a large amount of time, and she is close to the world record of just under 13 seconds.

Lesley is currently training at Louisiana State University and is gearing up for the games.

On behalf of the riding of Victoria-Haliburton and the rest of Canada, I wish Lesley great success at the games. We are all pulling for you. Good luck.
