Statements in the House

Parliamentarians May 10th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the pattern here is pretty obvious. Vote Liberal and you can get help from your MP. Vote Liberal and there might be money for your business. Do not vote Liberal and you are just shunted aside.

My question is for the Prime Minister. Most Canadians consider that to be patronage. Will the Prime Minister just simply stop this activity now?

Parliamentarians May 10th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, as a result of the actions by the member for Scarborough Southwest, the 75% of voters who did not vote Liberal are worried.

Can the Prime Minister assure Canadians that none of them will not receive second class treatment by this government?

Members Of Parliament May 9th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, now that it is public and now that every Canadian knows about this, I am sure he will help him as fast as he can.

Let us imagine a helpless, ageing veteran going to his member of parliament asking for help and he is told that because he did not vote for that member of parliament he could not help him. Will the Prime Minister simply say here in the House today that this will not happen again?

Members Of Parliament May 9th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, Canadians have had somewhat troubling news today. They found out that an ageing veteran who went to his MP was turned down simply because the MP said that he had not voted Liberal. Is that not a dreadful thing?

Will the Prime Minister tell his members that they are members for every single constituent, not just those who voted Liberal?

National Drinking Water Standards May 8th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, let us get this plain and clear. The member for Toronto—Danforth and the House leader approached with an idea and that idea did not go through.

Will these two individuals, along with the support of the Prime Minister, today commit that we will have a parliamentary committee on the issue of water? Yes or no.

National Drinking Water Standards May 8th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, you will notice that there was no answer to that question. Just a few months ago the government House leader and the member for Toronto—Danforth had been exploring a very interesting idea of a parliamentary committee on the issue of water.

That seemed like a pretty good idea to this side, and it turned out the Prime Minister said no way. Will he say today that a parliamentary committee on water would be an excellent idea? Yes or no.

Ethics Counsellor May 7th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, it is an interesting juxtaposition. We have the finance minister over here and the industry minister who is actually in charge of the ethics counsellor.

I would like to ask the industry minister whether or not he is willing to bring in legislation, since he is in charge of the ethics counsellor, and maybe to nudge his cabinet rival a little bit and say that he can bring in new legislation for an independent ethics counsellor.

The Economy May 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, earlier this week a leading expert in Canada on competitiveness, John Porter, said that Canada was sliding. That is a shame. I think it is because of the fiscal policies of the government, but one reason for that is job killing red tape.

It is easier to cross the border to work in the U.S. than it is to cross provincial boundaries and find a job. Will we see an end to job killing red tape in the upcoming economic statement?

The Economy May 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the parliamentary secretary missed that right at the end of those comments he said that these guys were likely to spend too much and that could make a mess of the whole situation.

This is what my constituents are saying to me. They are saying that they are losing jobs. They are saying they are having trouble looking to their financial future. Will we see new tax cuts in the upcoming economic statement?

The Economy May 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the economic news from the U.S. is not all that great this month. I see record layoffs. I see employment has fallen. In fact growth expectations are down.

Canada could well be right behind. In the upcoming economic statement will we find new, and I stress the word new, tax cuts and cuts to job killing red tape?
