Statements in the House

Grants And Contributions June 8th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister has categorically stated in the House that the handwritten bill of sale for the shares in his numbered company was written on November 1, 1993. We decided to test this claim and took the bill of sale to a forensic specialist for analysis.

She came back with the following opinion: “There is a high degree of probability that the numerals 1-9-9-3 have been altered”.

We need the original document to send for further study. Will it be provided?

The Prime Minister June 7th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I notice that the Prime Minister is not talking about the pension, which is what we are talking about.

Firefighters, by the way, came to the Hill asking for a change in their pension because many of them have to retire when they are 55 due to their hazardous working conditions. Do members know what the Prime Minister said? He said no. He ignored them.

How can the Prime Minister justify his new pension when he totally ignored the firefighters? Could he tell me that?

The Prime Minister June 7th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister says the story is not true. I would be very interested in hearing from him what the percentage increase for his pension is.

Senior citizens are saying that his pension is just too rich. Firefighters are saying that it is just too rich. The nurses are also saying that it is just too rich.

My question is for the Prime Minister. Why did he not campaign on this new pension in the last election? Is this not what we would really call a hidden agenda?

Justice June 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, let us give another example. Western premiers decided that they could not wait for the minister. They are to set up a sex offender registry on their own. Ontario has also decided that CPIC is not suitable for this issue.

When will the minister set up a national sex offender registry to protect our children from sexual predators?

Justice June 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the minister put the portion of legislation that would have protected children from Internet criminals into a big bill that has other controversial issues in it. She knows that. That is the reason we are not supporting it.

Will the minister bring in standalone legislation that will protect our children from Internet sexual predators? Yes or no.

Justice June 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, it is this government's lack of pragmatism that explains why our children will not be effectively protected against sexual predators using the Internet to find their victims.

Will the minister acknowledge publicly that she has learned from her mistakes and will, finally, introduce new legislation to protect our children?

National Defence June 1st, 2001

Mr. Speaker, that is a very interesting commentary. Military advisers said they wanted 35 helicopters. They wanted helicopters that could be the air for more than three hours. They are getting neither.

How does the parliamentary secretary explain the fact that political interference has intruded in what the military really needs and what it really wants?

National Defence June 1st, 2001

Mr. Speaker, it is interesting to note that the military asked for 35 and is now getting 28.

It also asked for helicopters that would allow them to be in the air for more than three hours. How long will these helicopters be able to be in the air under adverse circumstances?

National Defence June 1st, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the military says that it needs 35 helicopters to undertake its duties. How many will it get?

Census Records May 31st, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the minister should tell that to Grey Alexander, my constituent. He got a phone call from the census worker and he said “Trudy, is that you?” Trudy said “Yes, it is me”. Trudy has quit her job because it is so intrusive.

Grey Alexander says that he will not fill out that information, and I say it is intrusive, so my question stands. Why is personal information being made available to neighbours and acquaintances? It should never happen.
