Statements in the House

Cultural Industry May 1st, 2000

moved:

That, in the opinion of this House, the government should give consideration to exempting up to $30,000 of income from income tax as a gesture of support for those artists, writers and performers who work in Canada's cultural industry.

Madam Speaker, I would seek unanimous consent of the House to share my time with the hon. member for Dartmouth.

Taxation April 12th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Finance who I am sure is as concerned as anyone about inefficient and ineffective tax expenditures. We note that the auditor general has pointed out that for $2 billion in R and D tax credit expenditures or losses in revenue, only between $20 million and $50 million of new additional R and D has actually occurred.

Does the Minister of Finance not agree that it is time to assess the R and D tax credit program on a cost benefit basis to ensure that the taxpayers of Canada are getting the appropriate bang for their buck?

Health April 6th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Health who will know that not a single cent has been paid to the victims of hepatitis C.

A constituent of mine brought in a letter she received from her doctor last week calling for her to use the drug Rebetron. The cost will be approximately $1,700 a month for the next year. She says she does not have $1,700 extra a month and she has asked me to ask the Minister of Health what she should do.

Petitions April 6th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the second petition I wish to present is quite long so I will summarize it.

The petitioners from British Columbia are calling upon the Government of Canada to amend the Criminal Code to prevent persons convicted of serious crimes from being released from custody pending the hearing of their appeal, except in exceptional circumstances.

Petitions April 6th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure and an honour to rise pursuant to Standing Order 36 to present a petition on behalf of a number of people from British Columbia who are concerned about the undemocratic nature of the Senate and the fact that it is the only unelected Senate in the world today. They are calling upon parliament to take the appropriate measures to abolish the Senate.

Petitions March 24th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, I have a second petition which calls on the Government of Canada to amend the criminal code in order to prevent persons convicted of serious crimes from being released from custody pending the hearing of their appeal except in very exceptional circumstances.

Petitions March 24th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, it is indeed an honour to rise pursuant to Standing Order 36 to present a petition on behalf of a number of residents of British Columbia who call on parliament to recognize the fact that Canadians reject the legalization of the possession of child pornography. They ask the government to intervene in this matter to establish and strengthen the laws related to the possession of child pornography to ensure that it will never be legalized.

Transportation March 24th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Deputy Prime Minister. Is he aware that if he took VIA Rail from Halifax to Vancouver and he flushed the toilet along the way, the toilet would be flushed directly on to the tracks, leaving a trail of poo from coast to coast?

In light of the workers along the tracks and consideration for the environment, would he announce that the government will finally take steps to clean up this dreadful situation?

Petitions March 22nd, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the last petition I have is from people who are very concerned about changes to the Criminal Code of Canada, and they want to amend the code to prevent persons convicted of serious crimes from being released from custody pending the hearing of their appeal except in very exceptional circumstances.

Petitions March 22nd, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the second petition is from people in Kamloops who are concerned about keeping God in our constitution and have a very strong case to make. I will pass it along to you later to have a look at, Mr. Speaker. Basically they want to keep God in the constitution.
