Statements in the House

Petitions May 1st, 1996

Mr. Speaker, it is my duty and pleasure to present a petition on behalf of my constituents pursuant to Standing Order 36.

The petitioners have a whole variety of concerns regarding what they perceive to be excessively high prices for gasoline, propane and diesel fuel. They suggest that there seems to be price fixing taking place among the oil companies and that consumers are being gouged. They suggest that perhaps a consumer boycott of selected company stations would be an appropriate course of action.

Fisheries April 30th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Fisheries.

As a member of Parliament from British Columbia, I want to thank the Minister of Fisheries for meeting today with the B.C. delegation and admitting that perhaps the government had acted in haste by proposing the Mifflin plan.

When the minister goes to British Columbia tomorrow, will he consider the plan put forward by the B.C. Minister of Fisheries in terms of a new consultative process? Will he immediately stop the stacking of the licences and will he take action on rehabilitating the salmon in other fish bearing streams of British Columbia?

Department Of Human Resources Development Act April 23rd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, New Democrats vote no.

Department Of Health Act April 23rd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, the New Democrats will vote no.

Bank Act April 23rd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, the New Democratic Party votes nay.

Supply April 23rd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, we are following the suggestion by the hon. government whip.

Sales Tax April 23rd, 1996

This may not be a point of order, Mr. Speaker, but on a daily basis unanimous consent is sought to move the agenda of the House of Commons, and without exception the New Democratic Party gives its consent to facilitate the business of the House.

I simply wanted to make that point, having been denied the right to speak.

Sales Tax April 23rd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I realize the official parties have been recognized in their response to the minister. I wonder, as a spokesperson for a group of independents, if I might have a few minutes to make a few comments on this important issue. I seek the unanimous consent of the House to do so.

Fisheries April 19th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, my question is to the minister of fisheries. As a member for British Columbia, I feel obligated to say there is a sense of rage and British Columbians

are feeling betrayed by the minister of fisheries in imposing the so-called Mifflin plan as a solution.

There were 500,000 coastal representatives on Parliament Hill yesterday, saying his plan is wrong. Will the minister listen to the people of British Columbia this time and pull back from implementing his plan? This would allow British Columbians to have proper input into the decision on how to deal with the fishery crisis.

West Coast Fishery April 19th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, there is a seething rage developing in the province of British Columbia as once again British Columbians feel that the Government of Canada is ignoring their concerns.

Today representatives of over 500,000 people living in coastal communities say that the Mifflin plan fails to address the serious concerns of the west coast fishery.

I ask particularly the parliamentary secretary to the minister of fisheries and Liberal members from British Columbia to stand up for the concerns of British Columbians and not be a sop of the government in British Columbia. Your job here is to represent B.C.
