Statements in the House

Radio Canada International June 13th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, it must be remembered that it was this government which saved Radio Canada International. It is also true that there will be a very good partnership with Radio Canada International in the future.

We are pleased that the CBC is in partnership with Radio Canada International in this memorandum of understanding because, with the power of the CBC and the strength of Radio Canada International, we will accomplish wonderful things together.

Crtc June 12th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, it is precisely that interference we are trying to avoid. I would urge the hon. member, who has expressed a view which I am sure is shared by thousands of her constituents, to take the time today to listen to the CRTC's call for public comment and call 819-997-0313 and please make her views known.

Crtc June 12th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member will know that the CRTC has asked for public comment.

I happen to have the phone number of the CRTC here. It is 819-997-0313. I urge all who share the views of the hon. member to please call the CRTC today.

Canada Day June 7th, 2001

Yes. Mr. Speaker.

Heritage Canada June 6th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I already advised the hon. member that about a month ago I had a meeting with the hon. member in question. At his request we have appointed a special adviser to look into the whole issue. The adviser happens to be the chancellor at Lakehead University.

If the member has a problem with that, I think she should understand the chancellor at Lakehead University is above reproach and is establishing an open and transparent process.

For the marine conservation areas to work we need everyone on side. That is normal. Obviously that is not the case in the Reform Party.

Heritage Canada June 6th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, at my request about three weeks ago the hon. member in question has undertaken a process involving the director of the Lakehead University to ensure that the advisory capacity is full and open. I believe the hon. member is very happy with the process that has been established.

Raoul Wallenberg June 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I thank the hon. member for the question because that hon. member and hon. members on all sides of the House of Commons and in the Senate have worked very hard to see the recognition of Raoul Wallenberg.

I am happy to let the House know that for the first time, on January 17 next year, we will have a national recognition of Raoul Wallenberg day.

We hope to have all Canadians understand that he was an international hero, who saved the lives of and thousands of people.

Next year, January 17 will be the first Raoul Wallenberg day in Canada.

Canada Day June 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, June 21 is National Aboriginal Day, then Saint-Jean-Baptiste is June 24, and Canada Day is July 1. These are the feast days for the whole of Canada.
