Statements in the House

Official Languages April 27th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, today, Quebec's minister responsible for sport is saying that governments should not play politics with sport.

We do not want to play politics with sport. That is why today, tomorrow and Sunday we will be trying to reach a consensus with all Canada's athletes. It is a given that athletes must be able to train in their own language, in French, throughout Canada, and that is Canada's policy.

Official Languages April 27th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, first, we are glad that the Bloc Quebecois wants to see its athletes on the podium because, until last week, it did not even want to talk about athletes from everywhere in Canada.

Second, we have a very specific policy on official languages. If a national sports organization does not meet the rules on recognizing both official languages, it will not receive any funding from the Government of Canada.

Bilingualism April 6th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, he went so far as to work in French, to try to learn French, because of his belief in a country where both official languages are recognized. I hope that this is not the new Canadian Alliance policy.

Bilingualism April 6th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I sincerely hope that is not the official position of the Alliance Party. If it is, it is a complete departure from the very honourable statement made by the former leader of the Reform Party, Preston Manning, when he said he understood the benefits of bilingualism to all Canadians.

Telecommunications April 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I am amazed a member of a party, the vast majority of which comes from Alberta, would stand in her place and oppose the policy that created thousands of jobs in Alberta.

In the last four years the investment in television in Alberta has gone from $50 million per year to $200 million, precisely as a result of the Canada television fund and the far-sighted investments of the government in concert with the private sector.

I am sorry that her party is against television jobs because on this side we support the hundreds of thousands of people—

Telecommunications April 5th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, there is absolutely no requirement on any consumer to subscribe to any cable service.

Points Of Order March 28th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, this is precisely why I came forward and make no mistake about it. The comment was in direct response to the member for Edmonton North who stated that the secretary of state was attacking Christians. I passed the comment directly to the member for Edmonton North. She is obviously aware of the context, the context of which was that one of the basic tenets of Christianity is forgiveness. That was the context of the comment.

Points Of Order March 28th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order arising from question period. In the course of rather heated debate, the member for Edmonton North passed a comment on the Secretary of State for Multiculturalism in which she accused her of attacking Christians.

Whereupon I responded by saying what would she know about Christians, in reference specifically to the very important Christian value of forgiveness. I am sorry that members opposite have tried to construe these comments as being something that they utterly were not.

Multiculturalism March 28th, 2001

Exactly. If you know anything about Christians, you should change your tone.

Multiculturalism March 28th, 2001

What would you know about Christians?
