Statements in the House

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation April 13th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, when the member says that the minister has a say, in fact the minister has a say in appointing the president of the CBC and the Government of Canada appoints the board of directors of the CBC. Then we have confidence that the president and the board of directors of the CBC will manage the CBC to make sure that it is available in all regions of the country for everyone.

That is their mandate and we are very confident that the president and the board will carry out that mandate.

Mr. Speaker, what I said yesterday was we had not been aware of any information. In fact we have not discussed any such option.

Frankly, although I very much respect the arm's length relationship of the CBC to the government, I do agree with the hon. member that I think it would be a tragedy if English television in Montreal were not operating.

French Language Colleges April 13th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, I am glad to have this question from a member from the Windsor area, an area in southwestern Ontario which, along with northern and eastern Ontario, will benefit from our investment in these three colleges, through the opportunity provided to Ontario students to be educated in their mother tongue wherever they live in the province. This is good for Canada.

Mr. Speaker, if the member has information on this issue I would be happy to have him bring it forward. At the moment, my understanding is that the CBC is looking at a number of options. Not only have no options been made, but we have certainly discussed nothing about it.

Mr. Speaker, I guess the member must be clairvoyant because I have not heard any news of any closures.

Option Canada April 10th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, I was the one who gave the letter to the member opposite, obviously because we wanted to ensure that the audit was complete. I think that the auditor general was very respectful with respect to the clean-up that we did.

Option Canada April 10th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, included in the over 100 pages of documents that were given out two years ago on a grant that was issued almost five years ago were responses from the auditor general.

I am sure the member will be very happy to read the characterization of the work of the auditor general.

Option Canada April 10th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, if the hon. member takes time to read the hundred-plus pages that were provided to the House, he will see that everything has been checked out.

Option Canada April 10th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, I would just like to remind the hon. member that the House was provided with over 100 pages of information two years ago, including the 1997 audit.

Option Canada April 10th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the answer is exactly the same as it was two years ago.
