Statements in the House

Foreign Publishers Advertising Services Act October 8th, 1998

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-55, an act respecting advertising services supplied by foreign periodical publishers.

Mr. Speaker, it gives me great pleasure to present for first reading an act respecting advertising services supplied by foreign periodical publishers.

This bill concerns advertising services provided by foreign periodical publishers.

Banff National Park October 2nd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I think the member who belongs to a party that supports the integrity of Canada's national park system will understand that the government wants a plan that will keep parks for all Canadians and not turn them into residential areas.

In the Lake Louise approval we were able to recuperate 42 acres of land which would have gone to a golf course and for other activities. Instead we have put them back to nature. If the member and his party look at the overall Banff plan they will see we have a good plan to save the park for all Canadians.

Francophones Outside Quebec September 25th, 1998

How odd it is, Mr. Speaker. Last week, the Bloc Quebecois had an action plan that did not once mention francophones outside Quebec.

What is even more interesting is that on August 27, 1996 the member for Québec East, in agreement with Howard Galganov and William Johnson, appeared in the market here in Ottawa to call for bilingual signs in this city. That is what he did in 1996. Why does the Bloc Quebecois have a double standard?

Division No. 217 June 11th, 1998

moved that the bill be concurred in.

Banff National Park June 10th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, on the contrary. As the member will know, the preliminary bylaws have been in the hands of the hon. secretary of state for many weeks. He and I have had a personal opportunity to review all of the aerial photographs.

It is unfortunate what the Banff council did. Instead of seizing an opportunity to create a real ecocommunity into the 21st century, it chose crass commercialization. The secretary of state, the cabinet and I have rejected that position.

School Management June 10th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, first I would like to thank the members from all political parties who worked together to come up with an agreement that represents a $180 million investment, over a five-year period, in French language education in Ontario. This initiative will have an impact on more than 100,000 students attending 426 Ontario schools.

The difference between this agreement and others is that we demand a business plan that emphasizes concrete objectives, instead of simply giving away money.

Francophones Outside Quebec June 3rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I am sure all members will join me in celebrating the fact that, in recent years, the number of French speaking Manitobans has grown to over 100,000.

It is unfortunate, however, that the Bloc Quebecois is joining with the Reform Party in a Pontius Pilate type policy to isolate and assimilate all minority languages outside Quebec, because they do not want French spoken in Canada.

Division No. 186 June 1st, 1998

moved that the bill be concurred in.

Société Des Acadiens Et Acadiennes Du Nouveau-Brunswick May 26th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, with respect to his government's decision to cut funding to the Société des Acadiens et Acadiennes, I assume the hon. member opposite, who was part of the government that made the cuts in question in 1990, can answer.

As for our government, I can assure him that we have all experienced financial difficulties. Cutbacks of 33% were imposed on all organizations. I hope that the renewal, next March, of the Canada-communities agreements will mark another step in the right direction, as it did for the CBC and all crown corporations—

Crtc May 14th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I think all members of the House will join with me in sending certainly our sympathies to those families whose jobs have been lost as a result of this decision by a private broadcaster.

If the member has reason to believe that the licensing requirements are not being met, I suggest she forward that information to me. I will immediately ask the CRTC to review the licensing procedures that have flown from its original licence.
