Multimedia Products May 14th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, first I want to thank the hon. member for her question. We really care about the multimedia issue because it is really important for us, in Canada, to have good content in both official languages. This is why we will proceed very soon with other initiatives.

Second, it would be nice for those who are asking for French language content that Quebec start by authorizing Télévision française de l'Ontario to broadcast in Quebec, since it provides a French language multimedia content across Canada.

Sports And Cultural Events May 6th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I would like to wait for the report of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage, which is reviewing the whole issue of funding for sports.

I find it somewhat strange that the hon. member would ask us to provide some funding to what is, after all, a private company, but not to professional sports. Is the member saying that Jacques Villeneuve is not a professional?

Mr. Speaker, as is our custom, we want to work in close co-operation with the other levels of government. In this particular case, we are still waiting for Quebec's answer.

Mr. Speaker, I believe that everyone should be proud that Canada is the first country in the world to have a college that is accessed by computer. This Canadian francophone college is called Collège Boréal. It owes its funding to the support of parliamentarians.

Second, before long, I hope we will be able to announce that we in Canada have the first virtual university in the world. It too will be in French, here in Canada.

Mr. Speaker, I totally and absolutely support the request of the francophone community in Saskatchewan that French be recognized as an official language in Saskatchewan and I recognize the same thing for all provinces.

Unfortunately, the secretary of state in a former government, now the premier of Quebec, who had the opportunity to do the same thing, never gave his support.

Mr. Speaker, I am not always in agreement with the hon. member, but today is an exception.

I think that we must now give the committee a chance to do its work. We are awaiting the report, which will come out in October, and when we have a good report, we will look at the results in order to decide to what extent we can work together to save hockey teams, because hockey is a sport that was created in Canada for Canada. Why not?

Professional Sports April 23rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, I think that a committee is looking at a number of issues. One thing I know is that the member herself has had an opportunity to speak with the former president of the Nordiques about possible solutions a little while ago.

I hope that everyone will work together to find an answer to this problem, which is of concern to the Montreal Canadiens, as well as all Canadians.

Professional Sports April 23rd, 1998

We know that a committee is looking at a rather important issue. We know the entire community in Quebec City was upset to lose the Nordiques .

What is happening now is that a House committee, comprised of government and opposition MPs, including one from the Bloc Quebecois, is trying to look at how we can keep hockey here in Canada. I trust that they are going to be join in and make some good recommendations and that they are going—
