Statements in the House

Indian Affairs November 7th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I think the answer to the first question stands.

I would say this to the hon. member. I do not think we need lessons from the Reform Party on how to help the aboriginal people establish themselves in ways that are going to promote their self-sufficiency and their entry into the real markets of the world.

That is what the aboriginal business program has been doing. We have been providing opportunity to entrepreneurs in aboriginal communities to build businesses that are enabling them to be part of the real economy.

Indian Affairs November 7th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the hon. member makes very serious allegations of a criminal nature. He knows that these matters, if they are true, will be dealt with by the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

Trade November 3rd, 1995

Yes, Mr. Speaker. Another economic study last week indicated that the provinces of Canada do twenty times the business among themselves they do with the United States, once differences in size and distance are taken into account.

This reveals the importance of internal trade for jobs and Canada's economic growth.

In trying to make the internal market work better in Canada, it would be very helpful in the context of the current debate if some members of the House were less concerned about what powers are exercised in what capitals and more concerned about looking at ways to make the internal market of Canada work better to create jobs and opportunity for Canadians across the country.

Canadian Telephone Companies November 3rd, 1995

Mr. Speaker, the request that the member puts to me is one that is not within my powers.

I find it surprising that the separatist movement is so frightened that Quebecers would hear the true views of Canadians from across the country that they want to put up walls around their province to keep those voices out.

Canadian Telephone Companies November 3rd, 1995

Mr. Speaker, this really is a question for the CRTC. At this point, we do not have all the facts. As the hon. member knows, the CRTC made a ruling last Friday regarding the special rates announced by the telephone companies. That ruling should have been complied with by those companies.

The Referendum November 2nd, 1995

Sit down and shut up.

Environmental Protection Act October 24th, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I can really do no better than to associate myself with the remarks of my colleague, the Minister of Natural Resources. In responding to an earlier question she made it clear that we in government believe that both sustainable development and economic growth are important parts of our mandate as government.

As we prepare the government's response to the standing committee's report, we will ensure the concerns of the sustainability of development are front and centre.

I remind the hon. member that when the Department of Industry Act was introduced in the House it contained a mandate to pursue the objectives of sustainable development. That was a mandate I sought to add to the old industry, science and technology department act. I am proud to say that I was able to introduce it in the Department of Industry Act.

Gasoline Additives October 23rd, 1995

Mr. Speaker, I do not know where the hon. member stands except awfully close to the petroleum companies on this particular issue.

I can tell him where we stand. We stand with the consumers. We stand with the people who are purchasing the vehicles that are using the fuel. We stand with the people who are looking to have their warranties respected. We need to have standards that are consistent north and south of the border. They are not right; they are wrong. Let them talk to the makers of the vehicles.
