I think he should also call his friend, this gentleman who was involved in this piece of land, who strangely enough is very supportive of the Conservative Party. If he has anything to ask, maybe he should call the Harris people.

Mr. Speaker, this property was on the market for resale for 18 months and Canada Lands did not get any offers.

It put it for sale again and had an offer. I have been told that it was a normal transaction. A few months later someone came with a better offer and it was sold. For 18 months this property was for sale and we did not have anyone to buy it.

Mr. Speaker, many buildings have already been retrofitted and we continue to do so. We work with the agencies and all the departments involved. We have a problem and we intend to achieve all our objectives and have all government buildings retrofitted to meet the energy requirements.

Mr. Speaker, I would begin by telling the leader of the Bloc that there is no question of Inter-Loge's losing its deposit. If the agreement, which has already expired, cannot be renewed, negotiations will continue. Of course, the group will get its deposit.

In the meantime, I have asked my officials to continue negotiations, see if an agreement can be reached and come up with a solution to this problem. The problem is complex because the environmental impact is bigger than we first thought. So the situation needs to be reassessed, but already good—

Commemorative Stamp February 24th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, let me explain the process. The minister for Canada Post does not make that decision. An independent advisory committee decides which stamps are to be issued. The committee met last week and recommended that Canada Post issue a stamp to commemorate the Queen Mother's 100th birthday. Canada Post will issue such a stamp.

Housing February 17th, 2000

Mr. Speaker, the Affordability and Choice Today program is the result of a partnership with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Canadian Home Builders' Association and the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association.

This year, one of the 14 projects that we are sponsoring is a proposal to turn an abandoned plant into a place to live and work for young professionals and self-employed workers. This is a good program to create affordable housing.
