Statements in the House

Terrorism October 26th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague for asking me this question at this time.

At this moment as we speak, the Canada Post president is in Boston meeting with American counterparts about postal administration and they are working together to address this problem.

The member will be surprised to hear that we will have the same equipment and same machinery as the Americans. We want to make sure that we protect all our postal workers and all Canadians.

Housing October 25th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, in the last election we promised that we would house Canadians, as we always have. We committed $680 million in the Speech from the Throne on negotiating with the provincial ministers. As a matter of fact, we have a meeting at the end of November in Quebec City with all the provincial and territorial ministers of housing. I hope by then we will have a national housing program to which Canadians can look forward.

Bioterrorism October 17th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, as usual Canada Post always informs its customers to be very diligent in how to deal with mail. Public Works and Government Services October 4th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, the government has recognized that today's asbestos products can be used perfectly safely.

I have asked my officials to start work on a policy on the safe use of chrysotile asbestos in all federal buildings.

Canada Post June 13th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, I acknowledge the hard work of the hon. member for Sydney—Victoria on this file. He has been speaking with Canada Post authorities, with the president, and he has been speaking with me, the minister responsible.

I can assure him today that Canada Post in the near future will find a new vocation for the Sydney postal terminal.

Social Housing June 12th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, on the contrary.

Ms. Harel's press release says that a $25,000 involvement is necessary for these programs to work. It just so happens that we are proposing that $12,500 come from the federal government and that $12,500 come from the provincial government. This amounts to $25,000. I think we are on the right track.

Social Housing June 12th, 2001

Mr. Speaker, Quebec will get its fair share, based on its demographic weight, of the total amount of $680 million that we announced during the last election campaign and included in the throne speech.

I already wrote to Ms. Harel, the minister. I met her in New York on Friday and I told her that instead of issuing a press release she should have read the letter carefully, because she would have understood that Quebec will get its share based on its demographic weight.
