Statements in the House

Social Insurance Numbers October 9th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to inform this House that an excellent initiative was recently announced by the Minister of Human Resources Development.

A violent spouse will no longer be able to use computer technology to locate his wife. The department has just announced that steps have been taken to make it impossible for an individual to use his spouse's former social insurance number to obtain her new one and use it to locate her.

I commend Human Resources Development Canada for this contribution to our relentless fight against violence and crime.

Committees Of The House September 19th, 1996

It has been many years.

The Action Démocratique Du Québec September 17th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, the leader of the Action Démocratique du Québec has just distanced himself radically from his ex-partner, Lucien Bouchard.

Mario Dumont has just asked Quebec's PQ premier for a respite of at least ten years on the constitutional question and sovereignty. He said that Quebecers need time out in order to gather their strength behind a common objective, that of employment.

Mr. Dumont, who now defines himself as a Quebec nationalist, has just discovered what we have been telling the members of the official opposition all along. The issue of Quebec's separation is divisive for Quebecers and is harmful to job creation.

When will the members of the Bloc Quebecois finally get this through their heads?

Aerospace Industry June 18th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, Mirabel's Bell Hélicoptère Textron has just announced a project to invest over $400 million. Recognizing the value and the great potential of this project, the governments of Canada and of Quebec have promised to make a repayable contribution of $13.4 million, in addition to providing tax credits of close to $2.8 million.

Thanks to the development of this new product, Bell Hélicoptère was able to create 250 new high level jobs, in addition to ensuring the continuation of 260 existing jobs.

This major investment shows once again that greater Montreal is truly the aerospace hub of Canada.

International Kite Festival May 29th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, from June 6 to June 9, the city of Verdun will host its fourth international kite festival. Over 15 countries will be represented.

This festival, which won the Montreal small tourism enterprise award and draws more than 150,000 people, is the pride of all the people of Verdun, in my riding.

I invite all of you to come with your families to this international kite festival, which will be held in my beautiful riding of Verdun-Saint-Paul from June 6 to June 9. We promise you some good weather and a memorable show.

Petitions May 28th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to table in this House a petition signed by a number of my constituents, who are asking the government to protect their right to self-determination as a people; they want to live together in Canada and not in a sovereign Quebec.

Bicycle Safety Week May 8th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, on May 26, the bike path in Verdun linking Nuns Island to the mainland will be officially opened as part of Bicycle Safety Week.

The family biking activity to be held on that day in my riding of Verdun-Saint-Paul will be organized jointly by the City of Verdun, the Government of Canada, and the Optimist Clubs of Verdun and Nuns Island.

I therefore invite all members of this House and their families to take part in a bicycle safety day that will be filled with fun and surprises with good weather thrown in.

Middle East April 23rd, 1996

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister for International Cooperation.

Canadians have followed with great concern and emotion the tragic events that have occurred in the Middle East these last few days.

Given the marked interest Canada has always shown for the quick settlement of this conflict, can the minister describe to the House the latest developments aimed at restoring peace for all the families and children of the Middle East?

Mirabel International Airport March 6th, 1996

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Secretary of State responsible for the Federal Office of Regional Development.

Now that the firm Aéroports de Montréal has indicated what its plans are for the two airports, could the government tell us whether it is prepared to grant free zone status to Mirabel to promote and ensure its long term economic development?
