Statements in the House

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation September 23rd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I am delighted to note our colleague's interest in the CBC, this great federal institution which promotes our culture from coast to coast.

If she is referring to decisions that have been made, I would like to know what these decisions are. What was said earlier this year has not changed, so I think she is indulging in speculations she may have heard elsewhere. However, no changes or decisions have been made that contradict what we said earlier.

Port Of Quebec City September 21st, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I thank our colleague for her interest in the historic district of Quebec. Of course Canada played an important role in the development of the world heritage convention.

As minister responsible for heritage sites in Canada, I am always encouraging the very careful management of the lands in the old, historic district of Quebec and in adjacent areas.

To reassure her further, I am pleased to report that I was informed that the City of Quebec announced on June 23 that it was pulling out of a project to build parking spaces and, a few days later, the promoters of a Imax cinema project also abandoned their plans for that area.

This means that the district is indeed protected and I have no doubt that we will remain vigilant in the future.

Francophone And Acadian Communities June 22nd, 1994

I do not think we have to undertake a fundamental review of this government's policies on official languages. These policies exist and they are being defended and explained, and I believe we will pursue them. What is on the drawing board today is how we can improve and add to these policies.

Francophone And Acadian Communities June 22nd, 1994

Mr. Speaker, perhaps I should set the record straight. It is not exactly news to say now that there are budget cuts. Of course there are budget cuts. Just read the last budget brought down by the finance minister.

The purpose of our dialogue with francophone communities is to see how we can decentralize our administration to give them more authority and a chance to identify their needs so they can better serve the communities they represent.

Discrimination June 15th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, of course I listened carefully to the observations made yesterday by the Secretary of State Responsible for the Status of Women. I share her view that women in Canada are not an interest group. They are half the population. I would add that the other half would not exist were it not for the help given by the both halves.

Astral June 15th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, the Astral headquarters have always been in Montreal. The company's top management, including the president, are all from Quebec and live in Montreal. Astral employs more than 800 Quebecers and, thanks to federal assistance, it is investing $17 million in a technical centre on Sainte-Catherine street. That is the type of company that the hon. member from Rimouski-Témiscouata judges not to be concerned with Quebec's interests.

I will not hold that against her. I am sure that she is much more familiar with Saint-Germain Street in Rimouski than with Sainte-Catherine Street in Montreal.

Discrimination June 14th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I believe this a hypothetical question because I have not been faced with an issue of this nature.

Canadian Radio-Television & Telecommunications Commission June 10th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I do not make a habit of commenting on statements by the chairman of the CRTC.

As I said yesterday, yes, an appeal has come from the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadiennes du Canada.

If the chairman of the CRTC was referring to this particular appeal, I have already acted on this request. However, I have received no other requests.

Canadian Radio-Television & Telecommunications Commission June 10th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I already said that I react quickly as soon as I receive a communication with the kind of request mentioned by the hon. member. So far, I have yet to receive such a communication.

Canadian Radio-Television & Telecommunications Commission June 10th, 1994

Mr. Speaker, I weigh these decisions carefully, and consider the representations that are made, but there is no doubt, and I can repeat here what I have said elsewhere, that francophone and Acadian communities can count on the support of their minister.
