Statements in the House

Employment December 12th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, many businesses in my region are having a hard time renewing work permits for their temporary foreign workers because they have exceeded the new threshold, which was lowered to 10% by the current government. With unemployment at its lowest, the survival of these businesses hangs in the balance, not to mention this is also about people. Indeed, these workers and their families will have to leave the country through no fault of their own.

What measures is the Prime Minister considering to help these businesses hold on to their essential workers while complying with immigration rules?

Passports December 4th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, with over 135,000 passports stuck in Canada Post warehouses or held back by Service Canada because of the strike, many Canadians and Quebeckers are feeling anxious as they struggle to get their documents before going on vacation or to visit loved ones in other countries.

Can the Prime Minister tell us whether he has a plan B and whether his government has contingency measures ready to ensure that these Canadian citizens will get their passports in time to travel?

Employment November 18th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the renewal applications of many closed work permit holders are being denied because they are missing an impact assessment, either because they did not know they needed one or because they applied in a hurry. These workers are only being given the necessary information on the date of the review process deadline and so their renewal applications are being denied.

Why does the department not take the simple step of informing workers by email that they are missing documents? That would help prevent interruptions of work, negative impacts on families and businesses and unnecessary fees and delays for businesses, immigrants and the government in order to restore the status of these workers.

CBC/Radio-Canada October 28th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, we have learned that CBC/Radio-Canada paid its executives $18 million in bonuses in 2024. It is really something that executives are getting millions of dollars in bonuses while hundreds of employees are losing their jobs and the public broadcaster is asking for larger and larger subsidies every year to do its job. All of that is tarnishing the reputation of CBC/Radio-Canada and all of its artists.

I have a simple question for the Prime Minister. Does he agree with those bonuses, yes or no? If not, what does he intend to do to put a stop to them?

Taxation October 23rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, here is a simple problem that will only take a little political will to fix. When someone goes to Tim Hortons and buys six doughnuts, they do not pay any tax. However, if they decide to buy six sugar-free health bars, they must pay tax.

Because of an unfair tax rule, people pay more for healthy products, and that hurts our local businesses that are unfairly pitted against multinationals. Despite over two years of meetings and questions in the House, nothing has changed.

Can the Prime Minister tell us whether he intends to ask his Minister of Finance to fix this inconsistency, for goodness' sake?
