Statements in the House

Carbon Pricing October 10th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, they continue to drag their feet.

There has been another blow to the Prime Minister's carbon tax scheme. A new report from the Parliamentary Budget Officer shows yet again that Canadians are worse off under the tax. Here is what the total bill will be when the NDP-Liberals finish quadrupling this tax: It will cost people in Ontario $1,400; it will cost people $1,500 in Newfoundland and a whopping $2,000 in Saskatchewan. Canadians are already struggling with higher costs, higher grocery prices and higher mortgage rates. The last thing they need is another bill from a useless carbon tax.

If the government is so sure that Canadians support the tax, why not let the people decide in a carbon tax election?

Foreign Affairs October 10th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, after nine years of the Liberal Prime Minister, Canada has experienced a shocking rise in anti-Semitism and an increase in hate crimes of 165%. His divisive politics, where he pits one group of Canadians against another, only makes matters worse. It also does not help that he takes years to list terrorist groups on the list of banned organizations, allowing them to fundraise and recruit here in Canada.

This one should be easy, though. The Houthis are attacking civilian ships and innocent civilians, and our allies have already banned them, so will the government do the right thing and list this group as a terrorist organization today?

Privilege October 10th, 2024

Madam Speaker, I rise on a point of order. I wonder if you could clarify; I believe the rules about putting out absences or presences are about specific members. I would also point out to the NDP House leader that there are several Conservative members here ready and willing to—

Taxation October 9th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, on a point of order, the House leader said that Liberals were not participating in the current debate on Liberal corruption, and I just wanted to know if I could table the speeches from the member from Winnipeg—

Innovation, Science and Industry October 8th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, if the government House leader scrolled up just a little more in your ruling on the website, she would see where you ruled that withholding evidence after a parliamentary production order is a contempt of Parliament.

We are talking about Liberal insiders funnelling cash into their own pockets. Why do they not want to get to the bottom of this?

While Conservatives are putting forward real solutions to lower taxes, make housing more affordable and end the crime wave that the Prime Minister unleashed, the government is going to great lengths to keep this information hidden. It is effectively obstructing justice.

Why not let Parliament get back to work and hand over the evidence to the RCMP?

Innovation, Science and Industry October 8th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government is violating a parliamentary order to hand over evidence to the RCMP.

At issue is the Auditor General's finding that officials at SDTC broke conflict of interest laws 186 times and funnelled $400 million of taxpayers' money into their own companies, all this at a time when Canadians can barely afford to eat or heat and house themselves.

Now, by refusing to accept the Speaker's ruling, the Liberals have effectively paralyzed Parliament, pushing aside all other work to address the housing crisis, the inflation crisis and the crime crisis the government unleashed.

Why not end the cover-up, hold the lawbreakers to account and let Parliament get back to work?

Business of the House October 3rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, because the government House leader was trying to impute motives to my Thursday statement, I believe it would be fair for me to point out that there is nothing “cute” about Liberal insiders funnelling $400 million to their own companies.

Business of the House October 3rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, I would like to draw the government House leader's attention to the following passage from page 95 of Eugene Forsey's “The Question of Confidence in Responsible Government”, which is considered to be the Canadian bible on the confidence convention: “A Ministry which could not control the House sufficiently to carry Supply and essential business would have to be dismissed if it did not resign or seek a new House by dissolution.”

This morning, after reading the projected order of business, published by the House, I noticed the House leader had not bothered to schedule any government business. Since last week, she has been struggling to propose her ways and means motion regarding the small business and middle class tax hikes and the capital gains tax changes, a signature piece of her government's financial agenda. Has she abandoned that initiative? Has she abandoned those tax hikes? Has the minister conceded that she has effectively lost control of the House?

The government prefers to have Parliament ground to a halt rather than handing over the documents that the House lawfully ordered to be produced and transmitted to the RCMP. It would rather keep the House seized with this corruption motion rather than simply complying with the production order and living up to basic expectations of transparency.

If she is going to refuse to comply with the House order and is unable to bring forward any other business to the House, will she at the very least encourage the Prime Minister to dissolve the House so that Canadians can have their say in a carbon tax election?

Innovation, Science and Industry October 3rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the charter is there to protect people from the government, not to protect the government from accountability by the people. While millions of Canadians are suffering from higher taxes, higher prices and doubled housing costs, all caused by the government, the Speaker has ordered that the House of Commons can deal with no other business until the corruption motion is dealt with. It still will not hand over the documents, preferring that Parliament grind to a halt.

While millions of Canadians are lining up at food banks, Liberal insiders are lining their own pockets. When will the government hand over the documents, and when will the government get Canadians their tax dollars back?

Innovation, Science and Industry October 3rd, 2024

Mr. Speaker, after nine years of the NDP-Liberal government, taxes are up, costs are up, crime is up, time is up and corruption is way up.

Here is what we know so far. The Liberals stacked the SDTC board with their close friends. That board makes decisions as to which companies get grants worth millions in tax dollars. The Auditor General uncovered a massive scandal. The Liberal insiders funnelled almost $400 million to their own companies. They got rich and taxpayers got the bill.

Now the government is refusing to hand over the documents to the RCMP for a potential criminal investigation. What does it have to hide?
