Statements in the House

Party Membership April 3rd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, the only trust that has been broken is between the Prime Minister and Canadians, who have seen his abuse of power.

He is trying to chalk this all up as some kind of internal Liberal civil was, like in the Martin-Chrétien days. However, this is different. This is not about factions within a caucus. This is about two strong individuals who saw something that was wrong and decided to stand up to it.

Why does speaking truth to power disqualify members from sitting as a Liberal?

Party Membership April 3rd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, so far, everything the former attorney general has said about the Prime Minister's corruption scandal has been proven to be true, and everything the Prime Minister has said has been proven to be false.

Why is the Prime Minister still saying things he knows to be false?

Party Membership April 3rd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, so far everything to date that the former attorney general has said about this corruption scandal has been proven to be true. Everything the Prime Minister has said, from claiming that he never put pressure on her to she never came forward with her concerns, has been proven to be false.

Why does telling the truth get a member kicked out of the Liberal Party?

Justice April 2nd, 2019

Their defence, Mr. Speaker, is that everything is okay because they got caught. That is not going to cut it for Canadians. Nobody is buying the Prime Minister's excuse. The phone call between the former attorney general and Michael Wernick made it crystal clear. Michael Wernick says multiple times that the Prime Minister was firm. He says he was “determined, quite firm”, that he was in a “firm mood about this”, that “He's in a pretty firm frame of mind about this”, and finally, “And I think he is going to find a way to get it done one way or another.”

The former attorney general has implored her colleagues to let truth be the authority rather than authority be the truth. When will the Liberals finally start telling the truth?

Justice April 2nd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, we should never forget that the Prime Minister's first response to these allegations was simply that they were false, that he never put pressure on the former attorney general. In fact, the current Attorney General, the replacement for the former attorney general, who refused to go along with the political interference, said, “Neither the Prime Minister nor his office put my predecessor or me under pressure”. We now know that was not true. Why does the Prime Minister say things that are just not true?

Justice April 2nd, 2019

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister's version of events has changed several times since February 7, as he tries to explain his way out of this corruption scandal.

First he said the allegations were false. Then his current Attorney General said that neither the Prime Minister nor his office exerted any pressure on the former attorney general. We know that is completely false.

When will the Prime Minister stop misleading Canadians?

Ethics March 20th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, again, nobody is buying it. He can stop pretending. We all know that he sent his members in to block the investigation of the justice committee. He did so, knowing that there were more details to come out.

The former attorney general wrote, “These matters are still unfolding, and further clarity and information is needed.” For Canadians to hear the whole truth, they need to hear additional testimony and this investigation has to continue.

Once again, will he allow the ethics committee to conduct a full and public investigation into his corruption scandal?

Ethics March 20th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, nobody is buying that. We all know that the Prime Minister sent in his members of that justice committee to shut it down. They allowed their preferred witnesses to speak more than once, but then when it came to listening to the former attorney general complete her testimony, they blocked the investigation.

They have also refused to allow Katie Telford, the Prime Minister's chief of staff; Mathieu Bouchard, the PM's special Quebec adviser; and the Minister of Finance and his chief of staff to appear.

Now that the ethics committee is launching an investigation, will those individuals be allowed to testify?

Ethics March 20th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, that is false. He used his majority to block the investigation by the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights.

We have just learned that the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics will investigate the corruption scandal.

Once again, will the Prime Minister confirm to this House that he will co-operate and agree to testify before the committee?

Ethics March 20th, 2019

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister has just learned that the ethics committee has opened an investigation into his corruption scandal. Will he commit, right here and right now, to co-operate fully with this investigation and to appear and testify?
