Statements in the House

Jacques Parizeau November 6th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, faithful soldier that he is, Jacques Parizeau makes it clear: the separation of Quebec remains the top priority of a separatist government.

Faithful soldier that he is, Jacques Parizeau does not like to see Lucien Bouchard artfully dodge the referendum question.

Faithful soldier Jacques Parizeau reminds Quebeckers that the ultimate objective of the Parti Quebecois is to separate Quebec from the rest of Canada.

For this faithful soldier, a vote for the PQ is a vote for the separation of Quebec from the rest of Canada.

Thank you, faithful Jacques Parizeau, whose candour gives us every reason to vote Liberal on November 30.

Immigration November 5th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

All Canadians share the pain of the people of Honduras and Nicaragua. We are pleased, moreover, that the Canadian government has contributed $1 million in aid.

But I would like to know what the minister's intentions are with respect to future permanent residence or visitor visa applications by people from these countries.

Election Campaign In Quebec November 4th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, on November 30, Quebeckers will be asked to form a broad coalition and vote against holding a future referendum in Quebec.

The Liberal Party is their insurance policy against yet another referendum on Quebec's separation from the rest of Canada.

The Liberals' priority is clear: to harness everyone's energy to create jobs and invest in such critical areas as health, education and regional development.

On November 30, Quebeckers will have a golden opportunity to say no to Quebec's separation from the rest of Canada. They will finally have an opportunity to say yes to economic growth and to the implementation of projects designed to improve their quality of life.

Election Campaign In Quebec November 3rd, 1998

Mr. Speaker, the weekend saw the Bloc Quebecois adding to the stakes in Quebec's upcoming election.

The member for Rimouski—Mitis insisted that there would indeed be a referendum during the next term of office, if Lucien Bouchard were re-elected.

She even set a deadline, saying that Mr. Bouchard would probably hold the referendum in 2001. Quebeckers now know what is riding on their vote November 30.

If they want to avoid another referendum, Quebeckers must vote for a stronger Quebec led by the provincial Liberal party.

Quebec Election Campaign October 29th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the leader of the Bloc Quebecois enlightened us: a vote for the PQ is a vote for a referendum. Finally, Quebeckers now know what to expect. A vote for the PQ is a vote for the separation of Quebec.

The people of Quebec will have a golden opportunity, on November 30, to make clear their support for a united Canada and a stronger Quebec. Quebec will choose the real priorities when it opts in favour of continuing its dialogue with Canada. It will have an opportunity to vote in support of its values of belonging, of sharing and of openness, elements of its Canadian and Quebec identity.

We thank the leader of the Bloc Quebecois, who brought the real issue of the upcoming election to light. On November 30, let's vote for a stronger Quebec. Let's vote Liberal.

Scrapie October 27th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, Quebec sheep farmers are experiencing an untenable situation at the present time, because of scrapie.

Can the Minister of Agriculture explain to us what the Government of Canada is doing, and will do, to help this important industry in Quebec?

Cégep De Maisonneuve October 20th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, in September, some disgraceful acts took place at the Cégep de Maisonneuve, when the rights to freedom of expression and representation, that is the very foundation of democratic rights in our country, were very clearly interfered with.

The Société générale des étudiants et étudiantes at Maisonneuve college has its own goons responsible for vandalizing stands set up by political parties. Not only did they kick young PQ members out with much fuss, but on September 30, they vandalized the young Liberals' stand, arguing that no political party was welcome. A note posted on the association's billboard read “We boot them out”.

I am sure that the students of Cégep de Maisonneuve—

Bloc Quebecois October 8th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, ever since it arrived here, the Bloc Quebecois has been claiming to speak on behalf of the people it represents.

This means that, each time the separatists ask questions in the House, make speeches and, in particular, hold press conferences, they are expected to reflect the views of their constituents. But today, the truth is coming out once again.

I want to congratulate the member for Rimouski—Mitis. According to yesterday's edition of Le Soleil , the member held a consultation in her riding. She sent 2,000 questionnaires to find out what should be done with the employment insurance surpluses. She got 787 replies.

The people of Rimouski—Mitis want the surpluses to be invested in health and education and used to reduce personal income taxes, instead of lowering employment insurance premiums and corporate taxes.

I do hope the member's comments will reflect these results and that she will correct her leader, unless this is yet another case where they have to consult the head office in Quebec City.

Scrapie September 29th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, on this side of the House we are serious.

Since January 1997 in Quebec, nearly 12,000 sheep have been slaughtered because of scrapie. We are wondering about the way the food inspection agency handled the matter, and especially how they treated the producers.

What does the minister plan to do today to respond to the legitimate demands of producers and to this problem, which has gone on too long?

Scrapie September 29th, 1998

Mr. Speaker, my question is for the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Since January 1997, nearly 12,000 sheep have been slaughtered because of scrapie.
