Search and Rescue February 25th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives should make saving lives on both coasts a priority. Unfortunately, last week the Conservatives quietly shut down B.C.'s Kitsilano Coast Guard station in Canada's busiest port. This station costs less than $1 million a year to operate. In fact, it costs less than the travel expenses of just three Conservative senators. This is a reckless decision that will put lives at risk.

Why are the Conservatives defending their senators instead of British Columbians?

Business of Supply February 14th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I want to say the motion is a small step forward but it does not address the urgent need for an independent national public inquiry on missing and murdered aboriginal women, nor is it a framework for action to end violence against women.

I am wondering if my colleague can comment on whether she supports the call for an independent inquiry.

Petitions February 13th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, the second petition calls on the government to save the Kitsilano Coast Guard station. The petitioners state that the recent decision by the federal government to close the Kits Coast Guard station is a grave mistake and will undoubtedly cost lives and cause peril onshore and in the water.

The petitioners call on the government to reverse the decision and keep the station open.

Petitions February 13th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to present two petitions.

The first petition calls on the government to ban the importation of shark fins to Canada. The practice of shark finning results in an estimated 73 million sharks a year being killed for their fins alone. Over one-third of all shark species are threatened with extinction. They state that measures must be taken to stop this global practice of shark finning.

The petitioners call on the government to ensure the responsible conservation and management of sharks.

Search and Rescue February 11th, 2013

Mr. Speaker, on Friday, the Prime Minister claimed that the decision to close the Kits Coast Guard station was made in the interest of public safety. However, the people responsible for public safety on the coast contradict the Prime Minister's claim. Police, fire chiefs and coast guard officials have all agreed that closing the station will put mariners lives at risk.

Why will the government not listen to public safety experts and British Columbians and reverse this reckless decision?
