Statements in the House

The Environment February 28th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, Canadians do not have to choose between parties that are both controlled by corporations.

The Prime Minister allocated over $4 billion to the Northvolt plant, a project that poses serious environmental risks and that will not generate any economic spinoffs until 2037.

Before he committed to spending so much money, did the Prime Minister conduct environmental assessments or did he just listen to the CEOs?

Health February 28th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, New Democrats have long said that corporate greed is driving up the cost of living. It is also hurting our health care system.

Galen Weston's Shoppers Drug Mart, which the corporate-controlled Conservatives love, is now ripping off our health care system. That means more money in the pockets of Galen Weston and less money for frontline health care workers.

Why does the Prime Minister continue to let Galen Weston get richer while Canadians cannot get the health care that they need?

Northern Affairs February 26th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the minister knows the program is an abject failure.

There is no denying that grocery retailers in the north are gouging people and that the Liberal government is giving subsidies to these companies. Instead of helping ordinary people, these companies are giving massive handouts to the CEOs of big grocery retailers.

The question is simple. When will the Liberal government fix the program so that it works for the people and not for CEOs?

Northern Affairs February 26th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, people are getting ripped off by corporate grocery stores in this country; in the north, it is on another level. One litre of olive oil costs $36. The federal government subsidizes corporations working in the north with a program called nutrition north. Nutrition north gives millions of dollars in subsidies to these companies; the companies take a third of it and do not pass it on to consumers.

Will the Liberal government reform nutrition north so the benefit goes to the people, not to the CEOs of corporations working in the north?

Public Safety February 14th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister has an obligation to back up his words with actions.

With kids going online, we know they risk being exposed to harmful content, sexual extortion and harassment. In the last election, the Prime Minister promised legislation to hold those platforms accountable and to protect kids within 100 days of being in office. It has been 814 days and, still, nothing has happened. Children are being hurt as the Prime Minister sits by.

When will he stop protecting web giants and start protecting kids?

Foreign Affairs February 14th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, Netanyahu's bombing of Rafah and potential ground incursion will be a slaughter. Thousands of innocent Palestinians will die. The Liberals act as if they are concerned, but authorized $28.5 million in new military exports to Netanyahu. The Prime Minister has the power and the responsibility to protect civilians.

When will he stop selling arms to Netanyahu?

Public Services and Procurement February 14th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the rules were flagrantly violated, and millions of dollars were wasted.

The Liberals gave $250 million to GC Strategies and that includes $60 million spent on an app that does not work. The government could have built 125 affordable housing units with that $60 million.

How can the Prime Minister look Canadians in the eye after wasting so much money?

Public Services and Procurement February 14th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, we have learned the ArriveCAN scandal goes even deeper. The Liberals gave $250 million to GC Strategies. Let us talk about what that $60 million for ArriveCAN could have bought: 125 affordable homes or 800 nurses hired. Instead, the Prime Minister spent this money on an app that does not work and that no one uses.

How does the Prime Minister look Canadians in the eyes with all this waste?

Housing February 13th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, that does not sound like a Prime Minister who just heard that the housing advocate gave a failing grade to their government.

The federal housing advocate says that homeless encampments are a manifestation of how broken our housing system is.

She describes it as a “life and death crisis”. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister is simply saying that he could have and should have done more.

Will the Prime Minister stop listening only to the advice of real estate giants and help the people facing this serious crisis?

Housing February 13th, 2024

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal-appointed housing advocate gave the Liberal government a failing grade today. She has said, “Homeless encampments are a physical manifestation of exactly how broken our housing and homelessness system is across the country.” She has also described it as a “life and death crisis”.

While the Prime Minister says he could and should have done more to build housing, this shows how out of touch he is. Will the Prime Minister take this crisis seriously, follow the recommendations and ensure people have a safe place to call home?
