Housing May 17th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government is acting like the skyrocketing cost of rent is not a crisis, when it is one of the biggest challenges faced by Canadians right now. For example, in London, Ontario, we have an increase, for a two-bedroom apartment, of 23%. For a single mom, that means an increase of $394 a month. Over a year, that is almost $5,000.

How does the minister think a single mom will be able to afford that increase of $5,000 a year on her expenses?

Housing May 16th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the answer is $470. That is not very much.

Let us take another example, of a single mom with two kids in Vancouver, earning an average income in the city of Vancouver and paying the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment, which is $3,800 per month. How much money would that single mom have left over? The answer is that she would not have anything left over. That is how serious things are in this country for renters.

People are not earning enough to pay their rent, so when will the government understand how serious it is and do something about it?

Housing May 16th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, I have a very simple and direct question for the Minister of Housing. I am going to give an example of a single mom with two kids in the city of Toronto, paying the average rent, which is $3,300 a month for a two-bedroom, and earning an average salary, which in Ontario is $62,000 a year.

How much money would this single mom with two kids have left over, after paying her rent, to buy groceries for her kids?

Housing May 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, a recent report has found that Halifax has become the third most expensive city in the country when it comes to rentals. It has experienced an increase in rental prices of 25% in one year. That is a massive increase in rent.

It is clear that the Liberal government has failed renters. What is it going to do to bring down the cost of rent in our country?

Housing May 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, that answer was little comfort to the workers in Windsor. We need a deal that actually goes through and builds that plant.

The cost of rent has skyrocketed across the country. For example, in Laval, it now costs $2,000 to rent a two-bedroom apartment. That is a massive increase of 26% in one year. It is clear that the government does not understand the impact that this crisis is having on ordinary Canadians.

Will the Liberals finally take action to address this crisis and help people with their rent?

Automotive Industry May 15th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, there are 2,500 jobs at stake in the Windsor region because the Liberal government has not followed through on commitments it made to ensure that the plant being built by Stellantis for the NextStar batteries goes to completion. We have already heard from the mayor of Windsor, who has raised alarm bells and written directly to the government. The unions are deeply concerned.

All other levels of government have done their part, so when will the Liberal government follow through on commitments, get this plant built and ensure those jobs are protected?

Women and Gender Equality May 11th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the reality is, with the Liberal government, it is often all talk and no action, particularly when it comes to something as important as reproductive rights.

The Liberals promised to ensure that all regions of this country would have access to abortion services. Did they deliver? No, they failed. The Liberals promised to ensure that anti-abortion groups spreading misinformation would not receive charitable status. Did they deliver? No, they failed.

Again and again, the Liberals continue to say one thing and do another. Will they stop with the empty words and deliver concrete steps to defend, not just the right but the absolute right—

Women and Gender Equality May 11th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, once again, the Conservatives will try to reopen the debate on the right to abortion. Once again, the Liberals will place their hands on their hearts and declare their outrage, without doing anything to guarantee the right to abortion.

When will the government stop with the empty words? When will they guarantee access to abortion?

Indigenous Affairs May 10th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, in Saskatchewan, first nations are left out of major decisions regarding natural resources because their right to the land is not recognized. The government has obligations to consult with the provinces, territories, and first nations and indigenous peoples.

Will the Prime Minister commit today to respect free, prior and informed consent in Saskatchewan specifically, and across Canada, and ensure that the economic benefits flow to the indigenous peoples when the resources are on their land?

Pharmacare May 10th, 2023

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister made a promise in 2017, and six years later has not done it, because he in the pocket of the pharmaceutical industry.

Canada is the third most expensive country for medication in the world. That is really something, if medication is more expensive here than in Germany, France or Australia. The only countries where medication is more expensive are the United States and Switzerland. It is not that hard to understand why.

Why are the Liberals in the pocket of big pharma? When will the Prime Minister stop protecting billionaires and start protecting people who need their medications?
