Statements in the House

Sponsorship Program October 13th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, we are not prejudging the inquiry. What we are judging is a Prime Minister who says one thing and yet clearly does another.

What we are asking for is clear accountability which the Prime Minister does not seem to have the ability to show to the House.

I want to know from the cabinet minister, the very cabinet minister who used to stand up in the House and call the Prime Minister a corrupt yesterday's man, what changed in his attitude when he used to say that he would get to the bottom of this issue and force the Prime Minister to come clean. What happened to the minister?

Sponsorship Program October 13th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister has repeatedly said that he knew nothing of the sponsorship program and yet, to support a request by a Montreal sports organization and a group of Liberal friends, he actively looked for $600,000 in sponsorship funds. He said that he was out of the loop but documents show that he was clearly trying to get into the loop to help his friends.

The Prime Minister has denied his involvement but documents clearly tell a different story. When will the Prime Minister come clean and tell the truth about his involvement in ad scam?

Sponsorship Program October 8th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, we are not talking about the Gomery inquiry, but the public accounts committee with which this the Prime Minister promised to cooperate.

One of the cabinet documents just released shows that the sponsorship program was not about national unity but about helping the Liberals get votes in Quebec. How can Canadians trust a Prime Minister who on the one hand was saying he was mad as hell, but on the other hand was busy as hell hiding the truth from Canadians?

Sponsorship Program October 8th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, on February 18 of this year the Prime Minister told the House that the government was “quite prepared to have cabinet documents pertinent to the sponsorship inquiry released to the public accounts committee”. The Prime Minister failed to keep his word.

This week we learned that 10 million documents that were given to the Gomery inquiry were not given to the public accounts committee before the election. How can Canadians trust a Prime Minister who says one thing and fails to deliver on his word when it comes to accountability?

Sponsorship Program October 7th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, they hid the documents because these documents show that the cabinet had concocted a strategy to dupe the Quebec wing of the Liberal Party. These revelations would surely have had a bearing on the outcome of the election.

How can we believe a government that hides the truth from Canadians? How can we believe you?

Sponsorship Program October 7th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, yesterday the Minister of Public Works told the House that 10 million documents have been turned over to the Gomery inquiry. That is 10 million documents conveniently after the election campaign. Before the election, the documents submitted by the government could fit on a single book shelf.

Where were these millions of documents before the election and why did the government hide the truth from Canadians?

Lowering of Flags to Half-Mast October 7th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, when I was walking to the office this morning I was actually saddened and disappointed to notice that the federal government has not recognized appropriately the tragic loss of Lieutenant Chris Saunders yesterday in the HMCS Chicoutimi .

Therefore, I am rising today to ask unanimous consent of the House for the following motion. I move:

That this House demand the Prime Minister instruct all federal government buildings to immediately lower all Canadian flags to half-mast to recognize the tragic death of Lieutenant Chris Saunders yesterday on the HMCS Chicoutimi.

Canada Post October 6th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, a committee review of the candidate is not enough. The minister's friend is slated to fill this new position effective October 28. The decision has already been made and the minister knows it.

Will the minister rise today and tell us why we should believe that he will not bend the rules again in favour of his friends?

Canada Post October 6th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, last week the revenue minister appointed a friend of his and former banking colleague as the chair of Canada Post. The appointment violated the Treasury Board guidelines that the government established, and has demonstrated yet again that the government has a lot to learn when it comes to transparency and accountability.

Canadians want to know why did the revenue minister break the rules to give a job to his friend?

Gasoline Prices May 12th, 2004

Mr. Speaker, we will not take lessons from this Liberal government, which runs ads saying that Canadians should not vote for people because of their faith. We will not take any lectures from this government on that.

The Liberals like to posture as environmentalists, but the fact is that the Liberal agenda on environmentalism is full of hogwash. The Liberals are ripping off Canadians, ripping off travellers, ripping off cities and ripping off provinces. Why will this government not admit that its real agenda on gasoline is to raise prices so fewer people can drive, so it can meet its Kyoto targets? It should just admit the facts--
