Statements in the House

Sport April 30th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, on April 20, I asked the Secretary of State for Sport if she had demanded an explanation from Hockey Canada, a government subsidized organization, about the decision to include Shane Doan on the Canada team. There is evidence that this hockey player made racist remarks about the Montreal Canadiens on December 13, 2005. Last Friday, Hockey Canada named Shane Doan captain of the team.

I will ask the question again: did the Secretary of State for Sport question Hockey Canada and did she consult her francophone colleagues?

Mr. Speaker, I rise on a point of order. May I ask what the relevance is of this blow by blow account of what a criminal has agreed to plead guilty to? The hon. member—

Committees of the House April 27th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, I have a great deal of respect for your word and judgment. I have a great deal of respect for the person in the Speaker's chair. However, you are an expert in the French language and you know full well that when someone criticizes a group, it is a general statement, but in fact, it affects the individuals in the group.

When the Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board accuses the Liberals of being friends of an individual, I feel as though that includes me and I do not accept that. Our rules are such that he cannot insult me with falsehoods, with false accusations.

Committees of the House April 27th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, I have great respect for the person occupying the Speaker's chair. Are you standing or sitting?

Committees of the House April 27th, 2007

That is what I am doing.

Committees of the House April 27th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, the Standing Orders say that no member may falsely accuse another member. I would like him to withdraw his comments. If he refuses to do so, then I invite him to say the same thing outside so I can take him to court.

Committees of the House April 27th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, point of order.

I was having a hard enough time listening to the accusations made by my colleague, the Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board, but now he is accusing me of being friends with Mr. Lafleur. I demand that he withdraw his statements. I am not friends with Mr. Lafleur. I do not know Mr. Lafleur, nor does he know me. If the member wants to spew that kind of nonsense, he should go do it somewhere else.

Centraide Outaouais April 23rd, 2007

Mr. Speaker, on April 11 I was very pleased to attend the seventh annual Bouquet of Thanks recognition gala put on by Centraide Outaouais.

Tribute was paid to those who unceasingly work to improve the well being of their fellow citizens.

The recipients of the 2007 Bouquet of Thanks awards are: Gérard (Ti-Lou) Parent and Suzanne Lauzon, Louise Jeanvenne, Ginette Robitaille, Pierre Archambault, Donald W. Farley, the Patro de Fort-Coulonge/Mansfield, Hydro-Québec, the City of Gatineau, the Energy and Paperworkers' Union of Canada Domtar Local 33, Pageau Morel and associates, CIMA+, IP Monitor, the Centre de santé et de services sociaux du Pontiac and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.

Congratulations to all these people and companies. Their generosity and consideration toward the community are remarkable. By giving we can do even more.

Sports April 20th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, Hockey Canada's mission is to lead, develop, and promote positive hockey experiences. Hockey Canada believes in the country of Canada, its hockey traditions and the pride in representing this tradition around the world.

Does the Conservative government condone racism in sports, or does it agree with the mission statement and credo of Hockey Canada, an organization that is partially funded by the Government of Canada? Does the Conservative government believe that these values should be enforced by all Canadian sports federations?

Sports April 20th, 2007

Mr. Speaker, Hockey Canada's credo speaks of sportsmanship, and the development of respect for all people by all participants. It also speaks of hockey opportunities for all people regardless of age, gender, race, ethnic origin, religion, or sexual orientation, and in both official languages.

Since there is now evidence that hockey player Shane Doan uttered racist insults during a match against the Montreal Canadiens on December 13, 2005, can the Secretary of State (Sport) confirm that she demanded justification from Hockey Canada for its decision to include this individual on Team Canada's roster for the Men's World Ice Hockey Championships in Russia next week?
