Statements in the House

Labour June 10th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, we learned today that no labour inspections have been conducted at the Cliff Street central heating plant, even though an inspection was ordered by the court last year. All members of the House remember the tragic accident at this plant that led to the death of engineer Peter Kennedy.

How can the Minister of Labour justify the lack of inspection? Does the minister not care about the safety of federal employees and buildings?

Main Estimates, 2015-16 June 8th, 2015

Mr. Chair, could the President of the Treasury Board please confirm to this House that the supply bill is in its usual form?

Mr. Chair, can the President of the Treasury Board confirm that the supply bill is in its usual form?

(On clause 2)

Business of Supply June 8th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I am always disappointed when the hon. member does not include a quote from F.A. Hayek or Robert Nozick in his speech. He has the habit of doing so.

What the member is proposing is basically that seasonal workers in my riding do not have a right to a job. They also do not have a right to live in their community. The changes the government made to employment insurance are forcing workers out of their communities, away from their families, to move into cities. Whole industries are being destroyed by this. It is not good for the employers because they are expecting to have trained specialized workers in their community. Those trained specialized workers in their community, which my hon. colleague flaunted, are having to leave the community, and the employers and business owners in my community cannot find people to do the specialized jobs. How is that helping?

Compounding that, his party, as well as the party all the way down over there, stole money from Canadians to invest in their own insurance plans to bail themselves out. How is that right?

Public Works and Government Services June 8th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, the government is once again proving that it is incompetent in the implementation of its single email platform for all federal departments. This new system was to be ready this year, but it will not be in place until 2016. This clearly shows the inability of the minister in charge of Shared Services Canada to effectively manage this project.

Instead of blaming others, when will the minister accept responsibility?

Public Service June 5th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives' mismanagement has reached new heights: they are no longer even capable of paying all the government employees on time.

Some employees in a number of departments and agencies have not been paid in two months. They have not received a paycheque in two months. It makes no sense and it is all the result of the Conservatives haphazard budget cuts.

Does the President of the Treasury Board consider this to be good management?

Committees of the House June 2nd, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I listened with great interest to my hon. colleague's speech.

There is something we have to take into account in this debate: marijuana has changed a lot over the years. It has been bred in order to increase its hallucinogenic effects and can indeed have a very harmful effect on a child's young brain. Obviously, I am completely against giving marijuana to children. However, it is a question of age, of course.

We need to do more to educate people about the harmful effects of this drug, which has been modified so much that it is a far cry from its natural state.

Telecommunications May 29th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, although the Conservatives have announced money to provide high-speed Internet access to more regions, many areas in my riding are not benefiting from it at all.

In many parts of Chelsea, people are still having problems with connectivity and speed, and there are no solutions. We are not talking about the far reaches of the Arctic Circle; we are talking about a municipality that is less than 25 km from the Prime Minister's office. Clearly, the Conservative plan is not working.

What does the government plan to do to get the people of Chelsea connected?

Public Service of Canada May 27th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, it is getting harder all the time to separate fact from fiction in the Conservative budget.

The Conservatives claim that they will save $900 million by scrapping public service sick leave and creating a private short-term disability plan, as Canada Post did for its employees. However, Canada Post did not report any savings.

Why are the Conservatives trampling on collective agreements in order to achieve fictitious savings?

Business of Supply May 26th, 2015

Mr. Speaker, I listened closely to what my colleague had to say, and I agree with him.

It is unfortunate that the government does not trust taxpayer-funded scientists. The truth is the truth, and people should be free to talk about it. It is also unfortunate that the government got rid of the long form census, which provided insight into many populations.

I would like to know my hon. colleague's reaction to the government's habit of making up its own facts and its own truths without listening to our public sector scientists.
