Statements in the House

Petitions November 22nd, 2006

Mr. Speaker, the last petition asks that the Government of Canada restore the definition of marriage to its longstanding and traditional form.

These petitions are signed largely by constituents in my riding but also throughout Manitoba.

Petitions November 22nd, 2006

Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to present three very important petitions to the House. Two of the petitions ask that the age of consent be raised from the age of 14 to the age of 16.

Aboriginal Affairs November 22nd, 2006

Mr. Speaker, under the provisions of Standing Order 32 I have the honour to table, in both official languages, copies of the 2003-04 and 2004-05 annual report on the state of Inuit culture and society in the Nunavut settlement area.

Aboriginal Affairs November 10th, 2006

Mr. Speaker, as we have heard quite recently, the member for LaSalle—Émard stated at committee that there was no Kelowna accord, there was no signature page and, in fact, the money was not there. There were $25 billion in promises, promises that the Liberals had no intention of keeping. Our government is moving forward with real plans for aboriginal people backed up by real dollars.

Mr. Speaker, it is important to remember that it is the people of Kashechewan who will make this decision for themselves. We as a government want to allow for all first nations aboriginal people to have the liberty to choose how they would like to live their lives in the future.

Aboriginal Affairs November 10th, 2006

Mr. Speaker, Mr. Alan Pope has brought forward an independent report and an assessment of the situation in Kashechewan. That has been something that he took into account from many members of the community with considerable consultation. It has been well received by all those who have read the report.

We look forward to putting it in front of the people of Kashechewan and allowing them to make a decision on their future.

Canada Elections Act November 8th, 2006

Mr. Speaker, I would like to pose a few questions to my hon. colleague in relation to his assessment of the current electoral system. I think he would agree that integrity of the system is essential and improvements that are made to identify individuals and the exact constituency in which they are to vote are necessary. Perhaps we also need to ensure that people are voting in the right constituency. This is in part some of the intention.

Does he think the integrity of the system is an essential part? I also hearken back to some of our other key policy ideas in relation to fixed election dates. Does he feel taking that out of the hands of the government as a lever for which it can employ for political gain is a good thing?

Mr. Speaker, under the provisions of Standing Order 32 I have the honour to table, in both official languages, copies of the 2005-06 annual report of the Indian Claims Commission.

Mr. Speaker, I am very proud to say that last Sunday was a historic step, with the first modern treaty signing ceremony to mark the final agreement in Prince George, British Columbia, with the Lheidli T'enneh Band. B.C. minister Mike de Jong said that we are actually seeing things accomplished after years of frustration.

This morning's National Post wrote that it is “a realistic (and thus workable) solution that could be the model” native agreement throughout B.C. and the rest of Canada. It only took Canada's new government a few months to act and get things done, not decades like the former Liberal government.

Mr. Speaker, our government will take absolutely no lectures from the government of Iran on the rights of aboriginals in our country.

We are moving forward for aboriginal Canadians and for families that have not seen matrimonial real property. We are moving forward with a plan that will bring forward human rights where they have not been before.

We are very proud of the action being taken by the minister.
