Statements in the House

Business of Supply April 26th, 2012

Madam Speaker, I would like to point out that this government is making another harmful, arbitrary and unilateral decision that will penalize our seniors, especially our most vulnerable seniors.

The member across the floor talked about myths. I think she is completely mistaken and that this Conservative government is perpetuating its own myth. I recently met with some people in my constituency who are very worried about this plan to raise the retirement age and who clearly see—this is no myth for them, but a reality—that they will not be able to find new jobs in the labour market.

How does the member's government plan to address this kind of problem?

Citizen's Arrest and Self-defence Act April 24th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I would like to commend the hon. member on his speech.

Since this debate began, we have seen that citizen's arrest must be an exception and that calling upon law enforcement must be a priority. In this regard, can my colleague comment on the importance of educating and informing the public and civil society in the event that this bill is passed?

Citizen's Arrest and Self-defence Act April 24th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank my colleague for her speech.

Self-defence has been mentioned. We know that this element most frequently involves very subjective criteria. In the current bill, we worked, we put emphasis on a balance between subjective criteria and more objective criteria.

As we seek this balance, could my colleague give us her opinion about the impact that this will have on the judicial interpretation?

Immigration April 23rd, 2012

Mr. Speaker, that is far from a satisfactory answer. All these people have put their lives on hold and spent thousands of dollars to file their applications. When it comes to immigration, the Conservatives improvise or change the rules in the middle of the game. That is not the way to reduce the backlog of files, which will increase under this government.

What kind of message are the Conservatives sending to the entire world? And how will this unfair decision bolster people's confidence in our immigration system?

Safer Railways Act April 5th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank our colleague and congratulate him on his speech.

He has explained why there is an urgent need for this bill to be passed quickly. Obviously, the safety of users is extremely important. He also talked about various accidents that have happened and that certainly must not be allowed to occur again.

What other aspects does my colleague see, in addition to sustainable development, for example in economic terms, as being connected with safe transportation development?

Safer Railways Act April 5th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, first, I would like to commend and thank the hon. member for his speech. He emphasized the need to pass this bill in order to implement rail safety measures.

Can the hon. member tell us how this bill also supports sustainable development?

Immigration April 2nd, 2012

Mr. Speaker, the Conservatives have appointed three unilingual anglophones to the Immigration and Refugee Board in Montreal and Ottawa. Not only is this an insult to francophones, but according to La Presse, these members have a claim acceptance rate that is 50% lower than that of their colleagues.

Is this just coincidence? Is this because they have a poor understanding of the files, or are these board members obeying the government's instructions to stop legitimate refugees from entering the country?

Postal Services March 28th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, it is scandalous that more Canada Post corporate outlets are being closed. We have learned that one of the few remaining corporate outlets, on Boulevard Sainte-Foy in Longueuil, will soon close.

This bad decision has consequences for the people in my riding. They will have to travel as far as Brossard, or even to Montreal, to obtain postal services, and this is very worrisome for our seniors. It also means that jobs are in jeopardy.

Will the minister assume his responsibilities and maintain public services? Will he stop further job losses?

Financial System Review Act March 27th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, I would like to thank the hon. member for his speech. I would like him to elaborate on the connection between the financial system and the Canadian economy.

Financial System Review Act March 27th, 2012

Mr. Speaker, when the Conservatives introduced this bill, they said it was a technical bill. The fact is that this bill touches on a limited number of issues.

Can the member comment on the failure to address the co-operative sector?
