Housing  Mr. Speaker, one thing is clear. The cuts, the austerity, that are proposed by the leader of the official opposition would not help that family, would not help Canadians from coast to coast to be able to afford a new home or the homes they are living in even.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, the austerity being preached by the Leader of the Opposition will not help anyone access housing. That is why we are taking bold steps to get more affordable housing built faster. The Minister of Housing is working directly with municipalities across the country to find ambitious, community-specific solutions to the housing challenges they face.

Housing  Speaker, after eight years under this incompetent Prime Minister, Canadians are already living with austerity, while the government, which is not worth the cost or effort, is living large. I met a worker from the Seaspan shipyard who bought an ordinary house in Vancouver. Because of interest rate hikes, he is now paying $7,500 a month for his mortgage, and $4,000 of that is interest.

Support for the Canadian Armed Forces  Speaker, in the face of increased global conflict and natural disasters, it is now more important than ever to ensure that the Canadian Armed Forces have the support they need to do the difficult and dangerous work we ask them to do on our behalf every day. With this Liberal government now talking austerity and cuts, we need to make sure that serving members, their families and DND employees do not pay the price of pursuing cutbacks instead of fair taxes. Under the guise of updating Canada's military housing support, the government has already announced it will be taking $30 million out of the pockets of military families.

Science and Research committee  A way to track this data for equity could be to enhance compliance requirements through the federal contractors compliance program and through a strengthened Employment Equity Act and Pay Equity Act. A second key point is to underscore that under austerity, most Canadian universities have seen shifts in their ratios of tenure-stream appointments and a rise in non-standard academic employment. Dubbed “the precariat”, these colleagues are disproportionately racialized and gendered.

Housing  Speaker, what we are going to say to that single mother is that she cannot afford the Conservatives and their austerity that will make her life worse. What we are going to say is our government has helped to lift 2.3 million Canadians out of poverty. What we are going to say is our early learning and child care program has cut child care fees by 50% across the country already.

Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act  Since 2015, we have invested more than $120 billion in clean growth initiatives and pledged more than $80 billion in tax incentives. If we had followed the path advocated by some Conservatives—one of austerity and inaction—our constituents and their communities would be at a considerable disadvantage. This head-in-the-sand approach fails to take into account the areas where investments are being made, namely, natural resources, energy, buildings, transportation, manufacturing and many others.

Housing  Maybe it is dental care that they would go after. What we know for sure is that Conservative austerity hurts Canadians.

Indigenous Affairs  Speaker, Canadians are paying the price of a housing crisis, a mental health crisis and now the climate change crisis, yet the Liberals think that now is a good time to cut up to $7.6 billion in indigenous services. We have seen this devastating austerity from Liberals and Conservatives in the past: cuts that will hurt indigenous peoples, families and communities. Which programs are the Liberals targeting: housing, health, education, or Jordan's principle, and why are the Liberals not going after the billionaires to recoup the money they owe Canadians, instead of making cuts on the backs of indigenous peoples?

Finance  We are going to get more homes built for more Canadians. The only thing the Conservatives can offer is austerity and cuts.

Business of Supply  It has to get smart about its spending. That does not mean embracing austerity. Most of all, it must not achieve these things on the backs of Quebec and the provinces, or else services to the public will be disrupted. Most public services are delivered by Quebec and the provinces.

Business of Supply  There is a way to manage the state a little more rigorously. That rigour will make it possible to avoid the austerity the Conservatives are inviting us to accept today in their speeches. Historically, the biggest driver of price volatility has been oil prices. The best way to protect against this is to move to the post-oil period as soon as possible.

Housing  Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister, after eight years, is imposing austerity on Canadians. I just told the story, in French, of a Quebec family that has seen its mortgage payments rise by 64%. The mother of that family is living austerity by having to cut back on her expenses and probably move into a tiny apartment as a result of the Prime Minister's inflationary spending.

Government Priorities  Communities in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba had a choice between the Conservative Party's divisive rhetoric, austerity and cuts, or our plan to continue to strengthen the middle class, make life more affordable, fight climate change and so much more. There is a lot more hard work left ahead of us, and our team will be even stronger with these two new, strong voices in Ottawa.

Housing  He has consistently stood against those kinds of supports and investments in Canadians, offering instead cuts and austerity at a time when Canadians need continued support. On fiscal responsibility, we are still at the top of the class in the G7.
