Foreign Affairs committee  So Egypt can choose alone to allow things to enter from its border. There's no other screening that's happening.

Foreign Affairs committee  Please, yes, do that. To my knowledge, there are additional parties. I would like to get that information. My second question is in terms of what's going on right now with respect to the conflict. Beyond dealing with Hamas, is there a solely military solution to seeing that everybody lives with dignity and respect within the region—Palestinians and Israelis—or is there a political solution?

Foreign Affairs committee  Thank you, Mr. Chair. Thank you to the witnesses for being here today. I would like to start by stating and recognizing clearly that a person is a person is a person. I'm sure that this is a value that guides Global Affairs. All of us around this table recognize the common humanity we all have.

Diversity and Inclusion  Mr. Speaker, we have been clear. Our government has been clear. The Hamas attacks on Israel were terrorist attacks. However, Ms. Elghawaby's mandate to combat Islamophobia is 100% national. She is working with our newly appointed special envoy on combatting anti-Semitism to combat discrimination against Muslims here in Canada.

Situation in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank  Mr. Speaker, I think that dialogue is very important. We need to have conversations and build bridges with other countries to promote peace. We also have to promote a viable solution. It is very difficult to have this conversation today because of the war that is currently taking place.

Situation in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank  Mr. Speaker, there is certainly a spike happening right now in discrimination. Anti-Semitism, anti-Palestinian discrimination, anti-Arab discrimination and Islamophobia are happening within our society and communities. In America, we saw that a six-year-old Muslim boy was stabbed to death over 20 times.

Situation in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank  Mr. Speaker, that is an excellent question from the member from across the aisle. We need to recognize that a lot is happening within our communities. It is important for every member of the House to understand that. We need to bring people together, as difficult as that is. We must do so as leaders.

Situation in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank  Mr. Speaker, I will be sharing my time with the member for Toronto—Danforth, my friend within my party. This debate, this moment and this week have been extremely difficult for all who are watching what is happening overseas. It has caused fear, trauma, anger and hurt. These are emotions that are flowing through all of us.

Foreign Affairs committee  Ms. Marineau, you commented on the negative and unintended consequences of sanctions on your social media. Would you like to tell us more?

Foreign Affairs committee  On your social media, you mentioned something along the lines of unintended consequences and negative consequences with respect to sanctions. Would you like to elaborate a bit on this?

Foreign Affairs committee  Yes, thank you. To all the witnesses, I'd like to ask what the value is in harmonizing with other countries or working in coordination with other countries with respect to our sanctions. Would any of you like to elaborate on that point?

Foreign Affairs committee  I'd like to thank all the witnesses for being here. I'd like to start with Professor Charron. In your brief, you mentioned that an annual review of sanctions would be a good thing. Can you elaborate a little bit about what the value of an annual review would be, in your estimation?

Foreign Affairs committee  That's perfect. Don't you think an annual review would be a little bit onerous, though? Wouldn't you suggest maybe every two years or something along those lines? That's number one. Number two is an open question, without leading you anywhere: Do you have any thoughts with respect to some sort of sunset clause or something along those lines, or a review mechanism that would require renewal?

Foreign Affairs committee  I asked that question in the interest of getting to what is best and helpful for the people of Iran and all those fighting for freedom, justice and equity. I'll cede my time to the committee.
