The Economy  Mr. Speaker, that is more nonsense from the opposition leader. He accuses us of imposing austerity and in the same breath accuses us of investing too much to help Canadians. Come on. The opposition leader is making no sense. What he is doing is blocking measures that will help Canadians, such as the anti-flipping tax and the doubling of the tradespeople's tools deduction, and he is against the enhanced Canada workers benefit.

Budget Implementation Act, 2023, No. 1  The reality is that there will be a place that the Conservatives have to cut from. They are talking about austerity. They are talking about reducing the budget. Where will they cut from? Will it be dental care, care for children or clean water for first nations? What would he cut beyond slogans?

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, let me see if I understand the Conservative Party's austerity plan correctly. They are saying that Canadians are already facing hard times, so it is okay to make matters worse by spending less, investing less and providing less help for families in need.

The Economy  Mr. Speaker, while the Conservatives continue to argue in favour of austerity, we will continue to be there to invest in Canadians. While they are proposing cuts, cuts to programs and cuts to services for Canadians, we will continue to lift Canadians out of poverty, as we have done for 2.7 million people in recent years.

Finance committee  One of the most important things to focus on, I think, is that we have to start to parse out the things in the market that we leave up to the free market and the things that we manage, and we have to embrace that. I think in the last 20 years, in health care in particular, we depended on austerity to lead us to sustainability. Intuitively it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that you eventually cut your way to sustainability. You eventually cut your way into being unsustainable.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  We now have an additional $10.9 billion budgeted for 2023-24. This is an annual increase of over 90%. When communities have lived with austerity for over 150 years, the gap is huge, and it takes large investments and it takes time to build up infrastructure, capacity and much more. Since 2015, investments have been unprecedented, and they've been aimed at catching up with this chronic underfunding of core services.

Alberta Wildfires  My friends, let me be clear, this crisis is the product of the deadly combination of climate change and UCP austerity. The UCP's cuts to first responders and firefighter programs, like the rappel program, have undoubtedly left Albertans with less protection. Albertans are paying for the Conservatives' dismantling and defunding of first responders.

Finance committee  I still am worried that, if she shows up more, that number will go up. She makes McKinsey look like an austerity organization. What I'd like to say in this effort to find Freeland is that, going forward, the minister needs to be accountable. Moreover, the minister of industry said that there are two or three others that maybe he's willing to do.

An Act Respecting Regulatory Modernization  If it will not seek additional money from big companies and billionaires, that means that public services will be cut. That means years of austerity and years of misery for people who are already suffering. My question is simple: If he does not go looking for more revenue and he cuts public services, what services will he take away from the public?

An Act Respecting Regulatory Modernization  All countries that allow multinationals, banks and individuals with personal fortunes to escape taxation by using tax havens have an elephant in the room. How can we legitimately impose austerity policies, cutting public services or raising the retirement age, when we allow the wealthy to evade taxes? It is high time we addressed this, including the regulations in section 5907 of the Income Tax Regulations.

Housing  Speaker, Conservative politicians still think they can cut their way to growth because that is what they tried for 10 years under Stephen Harper and failed. That is what they are continuing to propose now, cuts and austerity: they can cut their way to new jobs for Canadians; they can cut their way to fighting climate change; and they can cut their way to indigenous reconciliation. Well, they cannot. The Conservative Party continues to cling to a trickle-down austerity approach that does not work for the middle class and people working hard to join it.

Budget Implementation Act, 2023, No. 1  Whether we are talking about this budget, or the one in 2005, which witnessed our beloved Jack Layton force the government to make historic investments in social programs during a time of Liberal austerity, or talking about when Tommy Douglas pushed the Progressive Conservatives to come to a deal on publicly financing health care, they were both major achievements. We have always used our time, our voice and our power in this place for good.

Housing  Speaker, I want to see the Leader of the Opposition get up again and explain to Canadians how great the 2008 recession was for people in Canada and for people around the world because that is exactly what he is saying. The fact of the matter is that the cuts, the austerity and the trickle-down approach the Conservatives always put forward failed Canadians. That is why we have invested in the middle class and people working hard to join it: to create economic growth, to create jobs, to lift people out of poverty, to create a plan to fight climate change and to build a future.

Labour  Let us look at the contrast between nine years of economic stagnation on the other side, when the only playbook from the Conservative austerity caucus was chop, chop, chop. This included the status of women offices and veterans offices, as well as raiding EI. Canadians know what government has their back, and that is our Liberal government.

The Budget  I would like to talk about another word that I heard on April 2 that the Prime Minister does not seem to know the meaning of, and that is the word “austerity”. When did being reasonable and fiscally responsible or using good judgment and common sense become synonymous with austerity in Canada? Even more serious than austerity, in my opinion, is the fact that people can no longer make ends meet, even by tightening their belt or earning a higher salary.
