The Budget  Literally hundreds of thousands of homes are waiting to be built, but are locked up in slow permitting processes. What do we have as a solution? The Prime Minister has taken the worst immigration minister in our country's history, the guy the Prime Minister blamed for causing out-of-control temporary immigration to balloon housing prices, and put him in charge of housing. Since that time, the minister has said that his housing accelerator fund of $4 billion does not actually build any homes.

Finance committee  In the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry's 2020 submission to the committee, your organization stated, “people of lower socioeconomic status, immigrants, Indigenous populations, the working poor, and the elderly make fewer visits to the dentist than those of higher social and economic status.” I think it is fairly obvious that Canadians shouldn't have to choose between groceries and a visit to the dentist.

Foreign Affairs committee  How could immigration policies be adjusted? Is that situation creating frustration in Africa? How would you define a win-win immigration policy?

Foreign Affairs committee  Thank you for the question. I also happen to be a “migratologist”. Immigration and development, as we understand them today, should be wins both for the immigrant and the state that they are migrating from, because it has invested in the immigrant's education, and for the state that they are migrating to, because it is interested in the expertise brought to the community.

Information & Ethics committee  As you're going to see in May, I'm going to be submitting to you a report with respect to immigration files, with a possible solution there whereby the government can provide information otherwise than having people have to submit access requests. That's going to reduce the number of complaints that come to me and will give me more time to work on the real complaints I should be getting.

Finance committee  When such housing becomes available, one might think that demand is likely to come solely from demographics, i.e., immigration and normal household formation. However, there is also this demand that has been suppressed over the years, and these people are also coming onto the market. As a result, when the supply of housing increases, the easing of pressure on prices is not as great as expected, given that this stock of some 630,000 households is also waiting for housing.

Official Languages committee  The next generations will pay the price if we don't try to find a solution. I would like to address the international students issue. In your opinion, should Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and the federal government recognize and accommodate the needs of educational institutions such as the Université de Saint‑Boniface when it comes to recruiting international students?

Committees of the House  Speaker, I have the honour to present, in both official languages, the fifth report of the Standing Committee on Official Languages entitled “Openness to the International Francophone Community: Optimizing Francophone Immigration to Canada”, which suggests ways to increase the demographic weight of the francophone community across the country. Pursuant to Standing Order 109, the committee requests that the government table a comprehensive response to this report.

Official Languages committee  Before we go any further, I just want to let everyone know why I am running the meeting right now. The chair had to go to the House to try once again to table the committee's report on immigration. As first vice-chair, I am temporarily filling in for him. Now we will go to my colleague, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Official Languages and committee member, Marc Serré for five minutes.

Official Languages committee  They contribute to the diversity and overall international experience of our students in Manitoba. They also play an important role because they support the community's immigration efforts. We know that many of our foreign graduates stay in the community after they finish school—nearly 80%.

Official Languages committee  The institution also contributes to its community through research and other activities, and is part of the larger francophone immigration project. The États généraux sur le postsecondaire en contexte francophone minoritaire confirmed the particular additional mission that a minority institution like USB must take on, namely to maintain the language and preserve the culture, in addition to ensuring a strong francophonie and the advancement of bilingualism within Canadian society.

Official Languages committee  We also need to know how this will evolve. We're welcoming more and more French-speaking immigrants, more and more rights holders. We were surprised by the data. We really need to do research to find out what kind of infrastructure we need not only at the primary and secondary levels, but also at the post-secondary level to be able to meet the demand over the next few years.

Public Safety committee  They can only open a container if there is a life in danger or an environmental risk. Do you think that access could be expanded? Representatives of the Customs and Immigration Union told us that there are only eight customs officers at the Port of Montreal. Officials from the Canada Border Services Agency, who were here earlier this week, were unable to give us a figure as to the number of customs officers at the Port of Montreal.
