COVID-19 There will be plenty of time for holding the Liberal government to account. Today as we face the pandemic of COVID-19 we learn that the Prime Minister and his wife have entered self-isolation. We learn of new cases every day. I urge Canadians not to give in to fear. We are going to carry on.

National Defence committee On Monday, we had more Russian planes in Canadian airspace and U.S. airspace, tying up four fighter jets, two Canadian and two American. Then we have today the WHO's declaring a pandemic. It's just when our attention is distracted with something else that Putin always seems to make a move. I'm looking through the estimates, but I don't see any money in here to upgrade our NORAD, our northern defence detection capabilities.

National Defence committee With Op Lentus, they're working in the cold and wet and they're already getting sick, but now we have the WHO-declared pandemic and the hospitals are full to capacity right now. Earlier you said that the hospital at base Petawawa was 92% complete. How long will it be before it's actually done and usable?

Health committee Would it not be something you'd want to take an active role in right now, increasing the blood supply right now before a possible pandemic occurs here?

Health committee It has called for countries to take “urgent and aggressive” measures. Has there been a discussion since the WHO's indication of the pandemic, in terms of large gatherings and events?

Health Speaker, China, Iran, Italy and South Korea have all been designated as high-risk areas and the WHO is now declaring COVID-19 a pandemic. While screening measures when entering Canada or travelling within Canada still have not been updated, the WHO is asking countries to take urgent and aggressive measures. The government has the ability under the Quarantine Act to require all individuals who have visited high-risk areas to be placed in quarantine.

Government Priorities The government's high taxes, wasteful spending and massive deficits have put Canada in an incredibly weak position, but now we are up against a global pandemic. Markets are tanking. Canadian energy is unable to get to market. Thousands of jobs are disappearing. Economic growth is screeching to a halt. Millions of Canadians are less than $200 away from insolvency at the end of the month.

Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement Implementation Act When is the Liberal government going to start to outlining its plan to Canadians in the case of a possible pandemic? Expecting Canadians to stockpile supplies is simply not enough. All Canadians deserve to be reassured that the government is prepared to assist and support those affected by the virus.

National Defence Speaker, the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces put their lives on the line to protect us every day. In the event of a pandemic, they may be on the front line as a response. They will be at a heightened risk of getting sick. They need to know we have their backs with the proper resources, resources like a functioning hospital.

Health Mr. Speaker, many countries are starting to talk about COVID-19 as a global pandemic. As of today, the vast majority of developed countries have already implemented measures for travellers. Here in Canada, there are no restrictions on or monitoring of people entering the country.

Health Mr. Speaker, ensuring our hospitals are well equipped in the case of a COVID-19 pandemic is a Canadian issue. We know that almost all confirmed cases have been from those entering Canada from high-risk areas, yet the government continues to claim that the problem is not at our borders.

Business of Supply We also have the coronavirus, which is gripping world. We do not know if it is contained. Could it be a pandemic? That is an issue Canadians are thinking about. However, today we are talking about changes to the Standing Orders. I will get to the fact that we only have four speakers today, but for now I will say that I am sharing my time with one of the next three speakers, the member for Perth—Wellington.

Public Safety committee What specific measures are being taken to also protect travellers at the border and airports in case of a pandemic? Well, it's not “in case of”—it's actually happening. Even in Italy and other places, there are cities that are being quarantined.

Health Theresa Tam, Canada's chief public health officer, the signs are worrisome. The World Health Organization is talking about a possible pandemic, but what is the government doing? Nobody knows. Radio silence. This situation is very worrisome. This is a serious, high-risk issue, but the Liberals are twiddling their thumbs. What is the government's plan for helping Canadians protect themselves from the coronavirus?

Health Speaker, with at least 33 countries reporting cases, 11 cases confirmed in Canada and over 80,000 global cases, we are now being told to prepare for a possible COVID-19 pandemic. Other countries stopped flights in and out of China; Canada did not. Other countries immediately introduced strict screening measures; Canada did not. We are now being told the window of opportunity for containment for stopping the global spread of this virus is closing.
