Human Resources and Skills Development  The government has moved forward to provide an economy that is creating jobs. Last month alone, under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance, the Canadian economy produced 89,000 jobs. Right now we are enjoying one of the best economies in Canadian history. We are not just relying on Canada's excellent social safety net, made better by the Prime Minister, we are also relying on the excellent leadership of the finance minister to create this tremendous economy that is lifting so many Canadians out of poverty.

Conservative Party of Canada  Fortunately, the Conservative government has the will and ability to take action in the interests of Quebec and Canadians: Quebec's formal role at UNESCO; recognition of the nation of Quebec; funding for Quebec's green plan; the softwood lumber agreement; funding for autoroute 30; return of the land at Mirabel airport; increase of custom tariffs on milk protein concentrate imports. Under the leadership of our Prime Minister, the Conservative team is showing that eternal opposition has its limits. The Bloc always has been and always will be unable to put an end to the centralist and paternalistic designs of the federal Liberals.

Automobile Industry  We will certainly put in place all the measures necessary to ensure that we have the strongest possible economy, something that is already happening under the leadership of the Prime Minister.

Business of Supply  I begin by thanking the environment minister for the hard work and the great achievements he has made. The government, under the leadership of our Prime Minister and our minister, is making headway. It is a shock to the former Liberal government that progress can be made on this file. It is ironic and hypocritical that the Liberals present this motion to us today.

Softwood Lumber Products Export Charge Act, 2006  I also congratulate him on his appointment as vice-chair of our international trade committee, where we have been able to discuss this for many hours and listen to witnesses from across the country. The fact is that Canada's new government, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, has indicated that we will move toward freer and fairer trade. That is exactly what this agreement does, with over 81% coming back into the pockets of the industry, providing certainty and stability.

Trade  Canada's trade is doing very well on the international stage, but we need to do better. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, we will do better.

Natural Resources committee  Not only did the Canadian economy as a whole suffer, but there also was a cost to communities, as mills closed and people were laid off. The settlement of the softwood lumber dispute, under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Minister of International Trade, will help restore certainty to the industry here at home for the first time in many, many years. Another aspect of resource-based employment involves the challenges that this workforce faces.

Justice  In fact, in March there was another report that came out that was sharply critical of the government. We have moved under the leadership of the Prime Minister. He has made it a priority to ensure that we help the victims of human trafficking. We have put in place a number of new measures today, measures that have been applauded by the Canadian Council for Refugees, the RCMP, the Future Group and many other groups.

Business of Supply  The Government of Canada is committed to bringing forward solutions to these problems in the coming months and years ahead. That is exactly why, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, $2 billion was committed in the government's first budget to these issues. I want to ensure everybody is aware of that. We want to ensure that taxpayers get the very best value for the $2 billion.

Citizenship and Immigration  The legal advice was that it would appear, from a legal point of view, that none of the outstanding claims would meet such a burden. The government is doing what is right for Chinese Canadians, under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Minister of Canadian Heritage. It will offer a formal apology. I think the member for Richmond should apologize to Chinese Canadians for not telling--

The Budget  We will give equal treatment to people in the fishing industry by giving them the same $500,000 lifetime capital gains exemption enjoyed by farmers and small business owners. Last week, under the leadership of our Prime Minister, this government successfully negotiated an historic softwood lumber deal with the United States. We will continue to support our Canadian forestry industry. Over the next two years, we will invest $400 million to encourage the long term competitiveness of this crucial industry, to assist worker adjustment and to address the pine beetle infestation in British Columbia This budget will help make Canada more competitive in the global market.

Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  I am so proud of our Prime Minister and my colleagues who all helped put this federal accountability act together. It is something we as a Conservative government under the leadership of our Prime Minister have placed before Parliament. I know that my colleagues on the other side of the House are going to support the accountability act as well. They realize the importance of restoring the confidence that Canadians once had in their government and which was so sadly taken away from them over the last 13 years.

Supply  We believe in the vision and courage of Canadians that will make our economy, our citizens and our country as strong as they can be. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, we will work to make the best country in the world even better. The world has seen the meaning of hope and it is Canada. The world has seen the future and it is Canada.

Fisheries and Oceans  Mr. Speaker, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, we continue to make the fight against overfishing a top priority, as we saw again last week at the APEC summit in Korea. We are also putting our words into action. Because of our enhanced enforcement on the Grand Banks, the number of vessels fishing groundfish last week was down by nearly 70% since over the last two years.
