Resumption of Debate on Address in Reply  We will stand against discrimination, because in a country as great as Canada, we must fight to make it better. There is no room for racism, intolerance, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or extremism of any kind. No Canadian should face barriers because of their faith, gender, sexual orientation or the colour of their skin. I want them to know that Canada's Conservatives will fight for all Canadians.

Status of Women committee  Incidentally, Amira Elghawaby is actually the facilitator for our anti-Islamophobia workshop. Thank you for your time.

Status of Women committee  As a society, we've come together—and rightfully so—to tackle this danger and to minimize its effects. We need to do the same when it comes to Islamophobia. I will conclude by repeating the same message that I started with: Islamophobia is a disease that kills. I call upon this committee to prepare a report with concrete strategies to stamp out this disease so that Canadian Muslims can just live our lives peacefully, free of harassment, injury and, most importantly, from the threat of death.

Status of Women committee  To address this crisis, I urge this government to work with Muslim women and Muslim-led community groups and organizations to combat Islamophobia with a focus on the gendered impact of this crisis. I urge this government to work with the provinces to mandate a community-informed education curriculum on Islamophobia, among other areas of anti-racism such as anti-Black racism and anti-indigenous racism, especially in public schools, so that our children grow up to respect people of all faiths, cultures and races.

Islamophobia  I commit to listening to them and to demanding better for them. It is the responsibility of each one of us to fight against Islamophobia and racism, and to root it out of our communities once and for all.

Budget Implementation Act, 2021, No. 1  In 2017, I was a member of a caucus that largely voted against Motion No. 103 when it was put forth in this House. Although nuanced, essentially it was a vote against recognizing that Islamophobia exists. I was wrong, and I am sorry. I want not just the Muslim community, but all of the communities of Edmonton, Alberta and Canada, to hear me say that Islamophobia is real. Islamophobia does exist within our communities, as witnessed this week at the Baitul Hadi Mosque in Edmonton.

Status of Women committee  Because of her, we have the tools, the lexicon and the partnerships to fight Islamophobia. That fight, for her, was not an easy one to fight. Our oppressions are connected, whether it is sexism, misogyny, racism, ableism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or other forms of hate.

Public Safety committee  These events aren't isolated incidents. These incidents continue to show us that white supremacy and Islamophobia exist in our communities and pose a huge risk to public safety. I know that we all have a role to play in fighting Islamophobia. I know that our government has taken steps in the work that we're doing through Canada's anti-racism strategy, from the work we're doing in adding white supremacists groups such as Proud Boys to Canada's terrorist listing, increasing funding to protect places of worship and communities' spaces, and now leading the national summit on combatting all forms of hate, including Islamophobia, which I know the NCCM has advocated that we do.

Budget Implementation Act, 2021, No. 1  It was a great course to introduce students to a lot of different ethnicities, religions and backgrounds. When I was in that high school, I can say without a doubt that I did not experience Islamophobia one bit. However, after 9/11, this has accelerated and brought Islamophobia and the fear of others into the limelight. Would my hon. colleague agree that these types of education courses in certain particular schools would help alleviate Islamophobia?

Budget Implementation Act, 2021, No. 1  Madam Speaker, Islamophobia is real. We see it daily. We have seen the height of it in the last few days and the recognition of it is important, albeit delayed. With respect to addressing systemic racism and Islamophobia, in particular, what can we do together as parliamentarians to elevate the debate on issues of racism and Islamophobia, instead of using them as wedge issues?

Status of Women committee  In fact, currently, Bill 21 in Quebec prevents women from wearing a hijab if they choose to work in various professions, including teaching, the law and policing. As noted in the CLC's report on Islamophobia, the interaction of gender, religion, race and culture is especially acute for Muslim women who cover. Their visibility puts them at higher risk and makes them much more vulnerable to gender-based Islamophobia.

Public Safety committee  These key recommendations and approaches are ones that we will further discuss at the National Action Summit on Islamophobia, which I appreciate also had important bipartisan support. From our perspective, these need to be undertaken in order to dismantle the immediate challenges around white supremacist groups in Canada.

Status of Women committee  The short answer is yes. I think that the online toxicity is a huge contributing factor to the rise in Islamophobia and the rise in racist conduct, quite frankly, beyond Islamophobia. Again, it's just going back to these echo chambers where people are finding themselves in groups, online discussions or social media channels where the worst elements of their prejudices are being spoken to and being encouraged.

Islamophobia  I move: That, given that, (i) Canada has been devastated over the last decade by repeated acts of violent Islamophobia, such as the Quebec City Mosque Attack, the International Muslims Organization Mosque Attack and the London Terror Attack, (ii) Canada has been deeply affected by Islamophobia at all federal, provincial, territorial and municipal levels, (iii) All political leaders at every level of government in Canada need to urgently change their policies to prevent another attack targeting Canadian Muslims, the House call on the federal government to convene an Emergency National Action Summit on Islamophobia that should take place before the end of July 2021.
