Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  The Annan commission does recommend that the government revisit it . We would go far further and suggest the Government of Myanmar really needs to amend the citizenship law. There are a number of reasons why that law is problematic, which I won't get into now, but suffice it to say that the Rohingya are effectively denied citizenship.

Subcommittee on International Human Rights committee  This is where there has to be urgent intervention. There has to be urgent pressure on Myanmar. Whatever the Government of Canada can do to join with the international community, the UN Security Council, and others to encourage swift action there would be very important.

Export and Import Permits Act  In the total take of what China exports in military equipment, 35% goes to Pakistan, 20% to Bangladesh, and 16% to Myanmar. Pakistan is not a signatory to this treaty. Bangladesh is a signatory but has not ratified it, so the rules do not apply to it. However, it intends to sign it. Myanmar has not done so either.

Foreign Affairs  We will continue to provide humanitarian aid to the Rohingya and call on the Myanmar government to allow access into Rakhine State to further assess the situation. This violence has been equated to ethnic cleansing. This is unacceptable and must cease immediately.

Canadian Heritage committee  The global arena engages both what I refer to as religious literacy—understanding the religion of leaders in another country—and political theology, in that a number of countries are majority communities of one religion; Myanmar is majority Buddhist, and Iran is majority Muslim. The religious community has a significant influence on the governance structure of the nation. I participated in briefings with the former ambassador of the office with members from the Department of Foreign Affairs, and I will say that I was shocked at the disinterest in understanding the religious realities of the world we live in, and the ideological realities of dealing, for example, with Communist China, or with Russia or North Korea.

Canadian Heritage committee  I was really excited today to see in the Prime Minister's announcement in regard to matching funds for Myanmar, that we're back to where we were until about 18 months ago, where World Relief and World Vision are back included with the group that includes the Red Cross and others.

Foreign Affairs  Speaker, Canadians have watched in horror as hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people have been forced from their homes and murdered in Myanmar over recent months in what is being described as ethnic cleansing. Last week, the government announced major initiatives to help put an end to the violence in the region. Can the minister give us an update on the additional measures our government has taken to allow Canadians to help the Rohingya?

Foreign Affairs  Our government remains deeply concerned by the crimes against humanity committed against the Rohingya. That is why I just launched a Myanmar crisis relief fund, a matching fund. The government will match every dollar Canadians donate between now and November 28 to support the efforts of our humanitarian partners on the ground.

Foreign Affairs committee  In situations of armed conflict and mass human rights violations around the world, we continue to document a virtual flood of arms from outside the country concerned, Myanmar's Rohingya crisis, Yemen, South Sudan, Iraq, Syria being some of the most obvious contemporary examples. There is no global arms embargo in place for any of those countries, which is absurd and outrageous.

Human Rights  Mr. Speaker, news out of Myanmar and Bangladesh about the Rohingya is nothing short of alarming. There are horrifying media reports of women and girls being raped and murdered, and thousands of children who have witnessed the unspeakable are on their own, trying to survive amid the chaos and with the ever-present threat of disease hanging over them.

Human Rights  Speaker, I thank my colleague from Saint-Léonard—Saint-Michel for his question. We are all very concerned about the humanitarian situation in Myanmar. There are now 900,000 refugees in Bangladesh. That is why, this morning, I announced additional aid in the amount of $12 million for a total of $25 million in humanitarian aid to the region this year.

Indigenous Affairs  Speaker, this government is extremely concerned with the human rights abuses in the news coming out of Myanmar. We know we have a tremendous amount of work to do around the world to promote values Canadians stand for so strongly. Making use of the connections we have with Canadians around the world is going to be an effective way of continuing to impress upon the world the values Canada stands for.
