Standing Committee On Industry  Mr. Speaker, it is a pleasure to participate in the debate today on taking care of small business. A few years ago the previous government loaded on small business one of the biggest paper burdens we have seen in many a long year, which was the introduction of the goods and services tax.

Speech From The Throne  It has been said that as Simcoe Centre goes so goes most of Ontario. My riding is named for the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe, and like the governor the riding has played an important role in the development of this province and this nation. The agricultural community in Simcoe Centre has been a mainstay of the local economy since the land was first opened up in the early 1800s.

Supply  It is no surprise that when Premier Klein started to cut back on government expenditures, a move promised but not yet delivered by this government, the first thing he did was to abolish-he did not scale it back, study it, consider it or talk about it-the MLAs pension plan. Only then did he move on to work on other government programs. A good leader only asks of others what he himself is prepared to do.

Social Security Programs  Madam Speaker, I am pleased to have the opportunity to take part in this very important debate. The revamping of our social security system is one of the most important issues facing our government and our people. By revitalizing these programs now we are investing in our long term economic and social well-being.

Supply  All of the parties on the justice committee unanimously agreed to create the subcommittee on national security. That particular subcommittee was reborn in this Parliament. That provides Parliament with a particularly precise window with the ability to look into this area, the subject of debate today.

National Sport Act  Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to join with my colleagues in the House of Commons this evening to support Bill C-212. I stand in this House as a certified CAHA hockey coach. I am from Saskatchewan and we do have world curling champions, both men and women. Hockey is played in every community on every dugout in the winter and on every piece of ice that one can find in every community in our province.

Pearson International Airport Agreements Act  Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to have the opportunity to make some submissions with regard to this bill before Parliament, Bill C-22. As a member from metropolitan Toronto I took a particular interest in this matter not only during the election campaign in the fall but indeed a number of years before when I chaired a federal Liberal Party task force studying the future of Pearson International Airport.

Department Of Industry Act  But since then, since the 17th and 18th centuries, there was Confederation in 1867 and the National Policy was established under Sir John A. Macdonald. It was a very ambitious plan. It all started with the construction of the railway better known today as CN and VIA Rail. This great project to link our country from east to west did not go unnoticed in other parts of the world.

Commemorative Medal  Mr. Speaker, at first glance I applaud and totally agree with motion No. 143 moved by the hon. member for Winnipeg Transcona. It urges the government to strike a distinctive medal for the veterans of the Dieppe raid during the second world war.

Coastal Fisheries Protection Act  Madam Speaker, yes. First of all I would like to express my appreciation to the member for Delta for allowing me to speak first. I have a plane to catch shortly and I want to say a very few brief words on behalf of the New Democratic Party caucus. First of all as the fisheries and oceans critic for the New Democratic Party I would like to inform the government that our caucus does support Bill C-29.

Supply  John Rae, one of the key people at Power Corporation, was one of the most important strategists behind the campaigns of the current Prime Minister of Canada". It is the financial interests of the richest Canadians which govern Ottawa, not the elected representatives of the people.

Members Of Parliament Retiring Allowances Act  Madam Speaker, Bill C-85 has a double dipping feature. I might add that I introduced a private members' bill which calls for addressing the real double dipping issue. My bill on double dipping is not included in Bill C-85 but I propose it be considered. Members of Parliament who are elected and receive pensions or other income would have their MP salaries reduced dollar for dollar with respect to the pensions they are receiving.

The Budget  Madam Speaker, February 22, 1994 will go down in Canadian history as the day that the Minister of Finance failed to rise to the challenge of coming to grips with the fiscal problems facing this nation. This government has a debt in excess of $500 billion and an annual deficit of $45 billion.
