Supply  We would not be breaking any new ground. Many countries are ahead of us. Australia, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and France all have lowered their legal levels to .05. Some provincial governments have taken the lead on this issue. Newfoundland has implemented a 24 hour license suspension with a $100 license reinstatement charge if a person's level is over .05.

Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act  The emergence of democracy was a very slow and painful process, first experienced in rudimentary forums in ancient Greece. Later the evolution of our modern democracy had its beginning in 1066 with the signing of the Magna Carta, a very important document. This document was hard won and began the slow process of stripping the kings of their immense power and devolving that power to the people.

Greece Independence Day  We are proud that Canada is supportive in helping to resolve the differences between Greece and its neighbours. I would like to conclude by offering my most sincere congratulations to the members of the Hellenic community in my riding, as well as to all Canadians of Greek origin, on this important day.

World Trade Organization Agreement Implementation Act  The Europeans not only recognize that to bring down the customs barriers and allow the freer trade it is not just economics that are involved but also the social, environmental and labour standards. They have made certain that countries like Spain, Portugal and Greece that have traditionally low social, environmental and labour programs have implemented policies to raise them up so that there is a level playing field. All the industries from Holland, France and Germany do not go down into cheap labour countries such as Spain, Portugal and Greece.

176Th Anniversary Of Greek Independence  Speaker, next week, Canadians of Greek origin will be celebrating a very special event, the 176th anniversary of Greek independence, and the establishment of modern-day Greece. [English] Canada has recognized the importance Canadians of other origins place on their cultures and traditions and has encouraged all Canadians to take pride in their heritage. In Montreal, where Greek immigrants began settling at the turn of the century, 1997 marks the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the Hellenic Community of Montreal.

Greek Independence Day  In 1821, after 400 years of oppression from the Turkish regime, the Hellenes, with the help of heroes such as Lord Byron of England, helped restore freedom to Greece, the birthplace of democracy. It is my hope that as we enter the next millennium the current provocations and tensions in this region will be completely eliminated. It is my suggestion that both nations should now concentrate on infrastructure and economic development.

Tobacco Act  Government members have now teamed up with the fundamentalists who are opposed to tobacco. These are professional whiners, like the hired mourners in ancient Greece, who resurface whenever an issue might be a little touchy with the public. These are people who used the École Polytechnique tragedy to promote their own ideology; they showed no respect in that case as well.

Supply  Speaker, I have just listened to our distinguished colleague from the Montreal region, who told us about how her father came from Greece 37 years ago, and how much her family appreciates life in Canada. I respect the feelings she has shared with this House. I would, however, like to ask her the following: she lives in Quebec, she was brought up in Quebec, she speaks French and English.

Supply  Speaker, I would like to cite my own personal experience as an example. My parents arrived from Greece. I have lived for over 37 years in this country. My parents chose Canada. This country has been good to them. They love this country. They are proud Canadians. I am a proud Canadian. Where else in the world would someone with my modest background have had the opportunity to serve their fellow Canadians in this respected institution which we call the House of Commons?

Marine Transportation Security Act  While we have not had any similar incidents in the marine field, the experiences of other countries such as Greece have not been so fortunate. Apart from the tragic loss of life that occurred in two separate and totally unanticipated incidents, the effect on the Greek cruise shipping trade and tourism in general was to cause losses measured in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Oceans Act  It will be because a fee is charged for everything, including dredging. When they see this, users from Greece, England, Australia, Taiwan or China may well decide to stop coming to Montreal, because it will cost too much. And it will cost too much because Ottawa will have decided so. As a sovereignist member of Parliament, I am convinced that such a decision is unthinkable in the context of a sovereign Quebec.

Canadian Bill Of Rights  We can easily see that by taking a look at the enormous amount of historical material available to us. We know the history of ancient Rome and Greece, China, Egypt and Mesopotamia. We know what happened in classical times, medieval times and in the industrial revolution right through to modern times. We know plenty about Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Russia, Cambodia, sub-Saharan Africa, you name it.

Canadian Human Rights Act  In Montreal, 60 per cent of people represent visible minorities, coming from Vietnam, Japan, Italy, Greece and so on. In short, 60 per cent of the present population of Montreal come from cultural communities. Naturally these people want to put their experience and their qualifications to use for the benefit of their fellow citizens and of a company.

Canadian Human Rights Act  It came to the conclusion that in spite of the fact these laws were rooted in centuries of practice, they could not stand in the face of a modern view about discrimination. The European commission covers a vast range of societies, from Greece and Spain in the south right up to the Nordic countries of Europe. It covers Protestant and Catholic societies. It has examined a whole host of complexities of modern societies and has come to the conclusion that discrimination of the type we are discussing today cannot be permitted in an enlightened, tolerant and modern society if we are to go into the 21st century in conditions which will be socially productive.
