Budget Implementation Act, 2009  This measure could serve to invalidate the recently agreed collective agreements that secured wage increases above the austerity measures announced in budget 2009. This section also rolls back the RCMP's pay--

Agriculture committee  For any questions that I can't handle, I certainly have a great field of people behind me. Thank you for the invitation to be with you here today and tell this austere committee about what the government is doing for Canadian farm families. In the current global economy, Canada needs a strong, profitable agriculture industry now more than ever. That's why this government is taking a proactive approach to moving the sector forward.

Public Accounts committee  These variances were compounded by the need to transfer assets to forward operating bases and a lack of connectivity to CF support systems. For example, supply technicians in these austere locations had no automated tracking system for items. The urgent need for certain equipment in Afghanistan also increased the pressure to deliver assets quickly. As a result, some were introduced without proper identification for tracking purposes.

Committees of the House  My colleague from the Bloc has alluded to the fact that Status of Women Canada was a victim of the government's spending cuts, of its austerity program. We know where that largesse went. We know where all of that saved money went. It went directly to the oil patch. It went to the corporations that needed it the least. It undermined the work of Status of Women Canada and the work of women's organizations across this country.

National Defence committee  They could call home, I would suggest, a few times a week if they wished to. Although initially fairly austere when we first went in and seized that ground, the forward-operating bases were developed. Certainly in my time there satellite-based Internet was brought in. Again, when soldiers weren't out on a combat patrol or otherwise, they were able to go back and use the Internet and use it as a means to send e-mails back and forth to home.

National Defence committee  It's not assessment and it's not treatment. It's a chance for a person who's been in desert...some place austere or a combat environment to shift gears to come back to Canada. And historically the roots of this go back to World War II. One of the things the Brits did was have health halfway houses for their veterans coming back from the front.

National Defence committee  For example, the C-130J is not encumbered, as older C-130s are, by a lack of performance due to altitude and heat. The C-130J is often the only aircraft that can get into short high-altitude austere fields in locations such as eastern Afghanistan. A 2,000-foot dirt strip at 6,000 feet of elevation on a 95-degree day with 20,000 pounds in the back is no big deal for this aircraft.

Bill C-2 (39th Parliament, 2nd Session) committee  In terms of the prison conditions, though, and the issue you've raised, our experience is that those who are seen as having the most challenges end up in the most austere and, I would argue, also some of the most brutalizing, conditions. That's part of why I've urged the committee to go and see those conditions. The reality is that even the most well-intentioned of correctional staff, whether they be senior or junior, know that in fact they have no ability to actually monitor individuals, other than in camera cells, in isolation, in some of the most inhumane, dehumanizing situations.

Canadian Heritage committee  Accordingly, the mandate of this cherished institution has fallen victim to shortsighted and unrealistic austerity measures and ambivalent government approaches to such issues as media convergence. To reverse this deterioration, the Writers’ Union of Canada respectfully makes the following recommendations: First is that the Government of Canada immediately put in place a formula to provide increased funding to CBC/Radio-Canada to permit it to provide programming prescribed in its existing mandate so that Canadian radio audiences have the option of listening to a distinctly Canadian public broadcaster.

National Defence committee  They were all over the place, but there was an austere-sized force down in the south. Their concentration was more in the southeastern provinces, Paktia and Jalalabad area, and those places. For all of our forces, the overhead is high. The tooth-to-tail ratio is not what we had in World War II, that's for sure.

National Defence committee  It's really not an easy place to get around. It's like a lot of societies that are tribal-based. It's very rural, with very austere conditions. There are people who have never left their village, ever. There are families that have been in that village for generations, and somebody may have gone to the village next door.

Budget Implementation Act, 2005  For heaven's sake, this is what we are proposing. We were all asked to tighten our belts for 10 years of austerity. The current Prime Minister, when he was finance minister, said we were left with this unbelievable deficit left by the Conservatives, the most wasteful, spendthrift government in Canadian history.

Supply  Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab was a poorly educated, narrow-minded, homicidal fanatic whose idiosyncratic, austere and uncharitable vision for his religion flew in the face of its own teachings and those accorded to its Prophet. al-Wahhab saw himself as an equal to the prophet Muhammad--this, of course, most people in Islam considered to be a heresy.

Criminal Code  Bill C-20 also contains reforms to ensure that it is not as difficult for child witnesses to take part in criminal proceedings. A courtroom can seem strange, even austere for most witnesses. But for children, the experience can be very traumatic. There have been important reforms in criminal law since the late 1980s in order to make the justice system more sensitive and better suited to the needs and realities of child victims and witnesses.

Firearms Program  The hundreds of millions of dollars sunk into this program represent nothing more and nothing less than a huge government exercise in wasting public funds, the hard earned dollars of the taxpayers of Quebec and Canada. As hon. members are aware, when this program was created, there was an atmosphere of austerity in Canada. Deep cuts in federal government program budgets, and in transfer payments to the provinces in particular, created some very precarious situations for the budgets of other levels of government.
