Canadian Heritage committee  I'll be quick. One of your goals is to compensate our artists in a fair and timely manner. I had the privilege of meeting with many stakeholders regarding remuneration and fair dealings. One of the things that I was shocked about was that CBC is one of the biggest abusers of copyright and remuneration.

Canadian Heritage committee  Shouldn't you be monitoring how taxpayers' dollars are spent? Over a billion dollars are spent from taxpayers. We want to ensure that artists are treated fairly. That's not a hard thing to accomplish.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. Thanks to the witnesses for being here today. The first question will go to Mr. Katz. We heard from a number of witnesses who tried to pinpoint what caused the decline in remuneration to the creators. We heard that the digital platform was a problem, that it created more competition.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. Emily, in your experience, are you finding that people prefer on-demand services and...the ability for Canadian content to be on that on-demand service? I know for myself, I have Netflix because it's easy access and everything else. My grandson is 10 years old and he's YouTube all the way.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair, and thank you to the witnesses for coming in today. When I was growing up, I waited for my show to come on. It would come on once a week and I marked it on my calendar. I didn't have a calendar, I just remembered it. Back then we didn't have calendars—not digital ones, anyway.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you, Madam Chair. Thank you, witnesses, for your submissions. I just want to focus on copyright at this moment. Even if we redo the Copyright Act to give it more teeth, who's responsible for the cost? Not only the cost, but when it's outside of Canadian jurisdiction, how is it enforceable?

Canadian Heritage committee  The biggest concern I have is ever since the digital platform became the platform that everyone wants to be on.... Is it competition that's driving the net income down? What is the mechanism? Why is there such a large drop from 20 years ago to today? Mr. Tamm, can you add to that?

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you very much, witnesses, for coming out here today. I had an opportunity to talk to a lot of indigenous people in my riding, and I heard about costs. They're anywhere from $400 million upwards, and this bill primarily deals with federal employees. I heard a comment from an elder.

Canadian Heritage committee  Thank you. I appreciate you coming forward, MP Jolibois, and Chief Googoo. I had many conversations in my riding with first nations and indigenous people, and the idea of a national holiday is a good thing, but there is another set of thoughts, which is “Why should people get a paid day off on our back?”

Canadian Heritage committee  Probably one of the most contentious issues is what date is appropriate. I understand you prefer another day, and June 21 is an option.
