Intergovernmental Relations  Mr. Speaker, the fact is that the opposition has no plans for skills development, except for raising taxes on everyday Canadians, and it has no idea what it will do, except spend billions of dollars on all kinds of programs and projects that result in nothing. What we are doing with things like the Canada job grant is involving employers and involving the private sector so that we can train people for jobs that exist and create new jobs.

Intergovernmental Relations  Mr. Speaker, Canadians expect their government to address issues such as skills training and labour market development. That is why we look forward to having open and productive discussions with our counterparts at the end of February. That is also why we have invested in skills training, whether it be our youth employment strategy, whether it be investments in apprenticeship grants, or whether it be our opportunities fund to help persons with disabilities get into the workforce.

Employment  Mr. Speaker, our economic action plan and our government are delivering real results for young Canadians. We have our youth employment strategy, which includes skills link, career focus, and paid internships. Every time we propose these pieces of legislation, the opposition votes against them.

Employment  Mr. Speaker, we are very proud of the skills training programs we have, and there are so many communities across the country that have applied for them. We are working with communities, employers, and non-profit organizations to deliver programs like this and services to Canadians.

Employment  Mr. Speaker, the allegations in question are very troubling. We have instructed officials to review this case on an urgent basis. Our government wants to make sure Canadians get first crack at any job that is available. That is why we have made important changes to the temporary foreign worker program, and that is why we continue to review it.

Employment  Mr. Speaker, the fact is that we are the government that is making changes to the temporary foreign worker program to make sure it is more accountable. It does not help when NDP members continually ask us to bring temporary foreign workers into their ridings. The NDP deputy leader and MP for Vancouver East has been asking us to do that.

Veterans Affairs  Mr. Speaker, I can assure the member that Service Canada is working hard to continually make sure the service is up to the standards Canadians expect. It is there to work hard for Canadians, whether they need it for employment, passports, or veterans affairs services. Service Canada is there.

Intergovernmental Relations  Mr. Speaker, the Minister of Employment is currently meeting with the provinces regarding the Canada job grant. We have listened to provinces, as well as stakeholders, and we have built a number of flexibilities into the Canada job grant. The Canada job grant is good for the Canadian labour market because it will train Canadians for jobs that are available and will also include employers, not only in the decisions, but in the financial investment.

Intergovernmental Relations  The fact of the matter is, Mr. Speaker, the member is not a minister, so she might find it funny that the Minister of Employment is actually meeting with the provinces at this time. We have been listening to the provinces. We have been listening to employers. In fact, let me tell everyone what Dan Kelly, president and CEO of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, said.

Employment  Mr. Speaker, the fact is that our economic action plan is delivering results for young Canadians. This year alone, over 70,000 jobs were created for youth. What our strategy does goes beyond anything that has been done before. We are training young people for jobs that are available, whether it is skilled trades, whether it is apprenticeships, or whether it is some of the skills they need to even get into school.

Employment Insurance  Mr. Speaker, the member is wrong. The modest changes we have made have not affected the availability for individuals who are on EI. Whether it is persons with disabilities, whether it is youth who are looking for jobs, or whether it is aboriginal people, we are creating more jobs and more opportunity so that people can work.

Employment Insurance  Mr. Speaker, is the opposition suggesting that EI benefits should be paid to people who are not in the country looking for work? We absolutely do not believe that. Those people who are paying into EI benefits—employers and employees—do not believe that. We want to make sure that EI remains there for Canadians who, by no fault of their own, find themselves out of work.

Post-Secondary Education  Mr. Speaker, I thank the member for the question. Under our government, we have done more to support young people when it comes to their education or getting the skills they need to get the jobs that are available. It is under our youth employment strategy, and it includes our Canada student loans program.
