Committees of the House  Recognizing the right to water would allow international law to address issues of unequal distribution, and safe water for drinking and sanitation in other countries. Canadians are concerned about the lack of the current position on bulk water exports. The Conservative Party did nothing in the election to address growing concerns about the stability and quality of Canada's water supply.

House debate  They recommend improvements to meet basic health requirements, such as adequate electricity and drinking water supplies, adequate sanitation installations and proper lighting, heating and ventilation in cells and working areas, and assist the prison administrators in realizing them. On the management side, our officers discuss with prison administrators their management practices, identify gaps, provide advice, direction and assistance on ways to improve their operations.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  The department is having a very hard time coming up with the necessary funds for housing, drinking water and sanitation on reserves. Several aboriginal women came and told us that they had undertaken consultations but that they had run out of money and resources to finish those consultations. More resources must be made available.

Business of Supply  Unfortunately, there are still communities like Kitcisakik in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, where the situation has more in common with what is happening elsewhere in Canada: a deplorable lack of sanitation infrastructure, housing and jobs. The Conservative government's decisions are doing nothing to help aboriginal communities—least of all aboriginal women—take charge of their own future.

Agriculture committee  Similar to what my colleague at the table said about the dairy industry, eggs and turkey and chicken are produced under a marketing system known as supply management, a system that ensures an efficient and secure food supply that respects Canada's high standards for sanitation and health while benefiting both consumers and producers. Nationally worth more than $7 billion of Canada's $36 billion in agriculture revenue, supply-managed agriculture is a major contributor to our economy, employing 215,000 Canadians and totalling over 20% of Canada's agriculture sector.

Business of Supply  We have not been able to address essential needs, including sustainable health clinics, sustainable provision of clean water and sanitation across the board. Afghanistan is the largest recipient of Canadian development assistance at present, with nearly $1 billion pledged up to 2011, but we need to do the job before 2009.

Budget Implementation Act, 2007  She makes forty Kenyan shillings a day, which is the equivalent of 65¢ or 70¢ Canadian in a day. We all know about the terrible rates of poverty, disease and the lack of sanitation in which people exist throughout the world. Working full time, she makes less than $1 Canadian a day and she considers herself fortunate. What the people of Kenya can do with little should be such a spur to countries like Canada to invest in making their lives better.

Darfur  The support of the Canadian government for Oxfam Québec has resulted in a program promoting health, water and sanitation services in Kalma, southern Darfur, a camp sheltering 125,000 displaced persons. A good number of these activities directly target children, which is of particular interest to me. I am proud of the work carried out by CIDA, which promotes gender equality in all its programs, and the Sudan conflict is no exception.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  In other words, are we going to transport people who need hospital care, are we going to bring them water and provide sanitation? The complaints will be filed against first nations governments but in reality, when we pass legislation that is not tailored to the people's experience or to the structural means at their disposal, we make ourselves responsible for the problems that the community will encounter vis-à-vis individual rights.

Business of Supply  Measures to facilitate this approach include increases in the Allowable Annual Cut for some areas, reductions in environmental regulations and planning.... The big issue around this is that this large scale salvaging sanitation harvesting has long term economic and social impacts on our communities. We are not looking far enough in advance to talk about the economic plan that we need to put in place in order to deal with what will impact on these communities over the next 10 to 15 years.

Foreign Affairs committee  One of the most overwhelming things for us was the magnitude of the challenge to put in place the most rudimentary infrastructure in terms of sanitation, in terms of energy, in terms of even crude transportation that would allow people to get to clinics in the context of HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. Finally, you've spoken about HIV/AIDS several times but haven't mentioned TB and malaria.

Transport committee  Flight attendants and all workers in the aviation industry deserve the same rights as any workers—health and sanitation breaks, breaks between assignments, time to eat. Rotational shifts and fatigue are not just safety and security risks to manage. The current regulatory process examined how it affects the planes in operation, and not how it affects workers' lives and their health and safety.

Development Assistance Accountability Act  We saw children living in the most squalid conditions imaginable, open sewers, no basic sanitation, children who could not possibly remain healthy because of the health hazards. Their living conditions are so desperate that there is no possibility of escaping contamination by TB.

Indigenous and Northern Affairs committee  The findings from this review of research and evaluation studies are not surprising to those who have worked in the area but have confirmed that: increasing occupant density of housing is associated with increased risks of respiratory illness; inadequate water and sanitation increases risks of enteric infections; even though scientific evidence available at this time indicates that mould exposure alone does not appear to cause asthma, mould found in indoor air is associated with decreased lung function and increased frequency of respiratory symptoms; and that mould remediation without attention to environmental tobacco smoke, pet dander and other allergens is unlikely to significantly decrease asthma symptoms.

Foreign Affairs committee  But I guess that after the trip that some of us have just taken, when you're looking at the absolute total absence of infrastructure for safe drinking water and sanitation, where World Bank policies have resulted in the annihilation of such education and health programs that were in existence, it's a bit of a leap to try to really grasp the application and the relevance of what you're proposing, maybe because it just seems fairly abstract from what we've been seeing.
