Business of Supply  Madam Chair, I am going to pivot on the next question, which is about COVID-19. COVID-19 continues to have a large impact on this country. As we all know in the House and around Canada, many have been hard hit, and the men and women of the seafood industry are included in that.

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, many have spoken tonight about engagement, as have you, minister. Engagement with our coastal communities is crucial to maintaining a thriving fishery. We can all agree on that in the House and in the country. What is our government doing to support a stable fishery solution?

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, when I worked at Cape Breton University, there was a slogan: “science matters”. Research matters, but in particular science matters. Under the Conservatives, cuts were made to DFO and science. I am wondering if the minister could speak about how this government is supporting science at DFO.

Business of Supply  Madam Chair, I will be speaking for approximately seven minutes and for the remaining eight minutes I will have questions for the minister. I am happy to be here tonight to talk about some of the important investments that this government is making in our communities when it comes to supporting our fisheries and coastal areas, especially those in my riding.

Health  Mr. Speaker, Canadians have changed their ways of life to keep each other safe. I am especially proud of my constituents in Cape Breton—Canso for all their efforts. In Nova Scotia, we have seen a surge in cases and that is cause for great concern. We need everyone to do their part to help stop the spread of COVID—19, and downloading the COVID Alert app is a great way to do that.

Veterans Affairs  Mr. Speaker, November 5-11 marks Veterans' Week, 2020. In Cape Breton—Canso we have 16 legions and countless veterans who depend on their support. Like businesses, legions have struggled to make ends meet during this pandemic. For the Minister of Veterans Affairs, what support can our government provide to legion branches and other organizations that support veterans across Canada to ensure that they can keep up their important work?

Harvey Lewis  Madam Speaker, it is with great sadness that I speak in the House today in honour of Harvey Lewis, a strong community leader in Cape Breton—Canso, who passed away this month. A proud citizen of Louisbourg for all of his life, Mr. Lewis knew what it meant to be community-minded.

Public Safety  Mr. Speaker, I am proud to stand today in recognition and support for our doctors. They guide us in preventing future illnesses and injuries and heal us when we are sick or injured. As medical professionals, they warn us about the dangers in our lives. One issue they continue to warn us about is gun violence across Canada, but not everyone is listening.

Lobster Fishery Dispute in Nova Scotia  Mr. Speaker, good governments, when they are looking at a situation like that we are facing today, want to bring the country together, not to just create awareness about a particular problem, but also to look within as a government for solutions and look to other parties for ideas, suggestions, recommendations and potential solutions that are going to help a problem that, as we heard tonight, is not a five-year issue or a 21-year issue, but an issue that has been going on for centuries and centuries.

Lobster Fishery Dispute in Nova Scotia  Mr. Speaker, I would disagree with the premise of the member's question. This government has been working diligently on this file with first nations chiefs in Nova Scotia, and not making just one or two calls to fishing associations, but working hand in glove to find a collaborative solution to this issue.

Lobster Fishery Dispute in Nova Scotia  Mr. Speaker, the Prime Minister has been unequivocal, along with the cabinet and party, in terms of the importance placed on truth and reconciliation, but also making key investments in areas such as education, health and housing. Just over the past year working in my first nations communities, the three I represent proudly, we have made some strategic investments around water, wastewater and housing that have been instrumental and important for first nations communities.

Lobster Fishery Dispute in Nova Scotia  Mr. Speaker, I will be splitting my time with the member for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour. Canadians are saddened by the violence, the threats and racism we have witnessed over the last couple of weeks in my home province of Nova Scotia. I can assure Canadians and the House that this government is focused on this issue and will continue to work with first nations to implement their constitutional treaty right to fish for a moderate livelihood and ensure there is security and safety on the ground.

Caleb's Courage Movement  Mr. Speaker, each September Cape Breton—Canso residents Mike and Nicole MacArthur, along with their family, prepare for the annual Caleb's Courage Superhero Walk, Run or Fly. It is a community fundraiser in honour of their son Caleb, who bravely battled cancer until he passed away in 2015.

Allan Pace  Mr. Speaker, it is with great sadness that I rise in this House today to remember Al Pace, a community leader Cape Breton lost last week at 81 years of age. Al was known for many things, and being a committed and loving family man was one of them. Al was a founding member of Sydco Fuels and Scotia Propane.
