moved for leave to introduce Bill C-294, An Act to designate the month of October as Hungarian Heritage Month.

Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise today to introduce legislation to designate October as Hungarian heritage month, with thanks to my seconder, the hon. member for Vancouver East.

As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution, this bill would provide an important opportunity to recognize the remarkable contributions of Hungarian Canadians to our nation's social, economic, academic and cultural fabric.

From the first Hungarian immigrants in the late 19th century to the tens of thousands who arrived following the 1956 uprising, their resilience, talents and determination have helped build our country. With some 350,000 Canadians of Hungarian descent, from myself, proudly, to business leaders like Peter Munk, Nobel Prize winner John Polanyi and global music star Alanis Morissette, Hungarian Canadians have made their mark in Canada and on the world stage. Hungarian heritage month would help to celebrate that legacy and ensure that it is passed on to future generations.

I would like to thank His Excellency Miklos Lengyel, Hungary's ambassador to Canada, for his assistance with this initiative.
