Just so our learned law clerks understand the meaning and logic of my votes, which are anything but contradictory, I would just like to point out that it is possible to amend a bill to improve it, to change something. However, if the bill deals with parole and amendments that are needed in terms of when a judge hands down his sentence, I think that is outside the scope of the bill. That's why I was prepared to sustain your rulings. My view is that these amendments were legitimate, even if I was not in favour of them.

I'd just like to say thank you to everybody here tonight--the staff and all the members at the table. This has been a long day. I'm sure at times we thought we'd rather be somewhere else, but we owe a debt of gratitude to everyone here tonight. Thank you very much.

Thank you again.

Ms. Campbell, thank you for appearing and sticking around until the end. Sometimes we take for granted the great expertise we have in the House of Commons here in Canada. I just want to personally thank you for all the great work you have done over the years and for what you've done here this evening.
